A pic from the wildlife spectacular going on in WEst Cork at the moment. The second biggest animal on the planet after the blue whale this animal would be upwards of 55ft long and 50 tons in weight

Pic doesnt really show the size of the animal. You are seeing less than 20% of the animal above the surface.

MM, spent the day at Galley Head today and not a sign of any whale activity. A few dolphins swam by around mid day that was all. The place was crowded so I wasn’t alone standing in the cold. Plenty of people with DSLRs ready to click if there had been any activity.

I was there from aroun 14.30 to 15.30 prob saw you. I stood on the wall in front of the lighthouse. Picked up the animals about 6 miles south west of the lighthouse but they were very distant and could only be seen with binoculars and at that only there blows.
Yes its as crowed as ive seen in a long long time, its amazing what a bit of news coverage will do. Realistically the amount of times you’ll get to snap these from the shore are tiny. You gotta get out on one of the whalewatching boats. the best your gonna do is see there blows as they surface, an awesome site in itself.

I pointed out the animals to a few people today but I think people thought from the news that they were gona swim up and perform for them

Now you really made my day, just checked the camera and the last picture I took of a gull was at 15.05 so I might have just missed them. Probably saw you alright, we were standing half way down the hill east of the light house.

I would say most people missed them. They were extremely hard to find today. Last sunday we had 6 or 7 animals blowing east of the galley. and the blows were visible with the naked eye.

Nice shot Charlie, Long strand as a back drop looks good even on a dull day. That new lens looks like its good and sharp as expected.

Did the shot of the Minke come out okay? I thought I had a great shot of a Minke, but Nic pointed out its a Fin!! whoops had to quickly rename that one on my website!!

Yes charlie I was on voyager with you

Dan here. You got a lovely shot there. I can see why your lense cost as much, great clarity.

Im trying to research my next lense, my first real buy really. Id like to go to 300mm but id be temtped to stay at 200mm with clarity like that.
