I’m getting fierce stick from my daughter over this portrait of her. She says I’ve overdone the skin softening. etc.
I am delighted with it, but I’d be delighted to hear any thoughts on it.

AnonymousParticipantIsabellaParticipantit is a beautiful portrait, but at the same time if she doesnt feel that it is an accurate portrayal of her that is her right and i would respect her for it. the expression and lighting are spot on.
i know of plenty of portraits of myself that other people say ‘ oh thats lovely’ but i dont like them as i dont feel they look like ‘me’. i think the tendency to idealise beauty and go for this look that is completely polished and hyperreal is a bit odd… but on the other hand there are plenty of people out there who would be delighted, and some who wouldnt countenance showing off anything else as that is what the media dictates. it is a matter of character.
just my opinion of course, and i dont know how far from reality it looks as i havent seen her in real life! might be interesting to compare unaltered with processed images to see the difference. as a practice image i think you’ve done a very good job, i certainly dont see any glaring or obvious flaws or hints that it is over processed
lousyParticipantThank you John17, very nice of you to take the time to answer my query.
Thank you also Isabella, and I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with your synopsis. That is exactly what she said. She has a couple of freckles that I tend to get rid of, but she says “that’s me” and should be left. However I’m thinking what a magazine would say [if I was lucky enough to be involved with one]. Even though I have a small studio, I only do this as a hobby and looking at other more pro togs who do this commercially, well I suppose I’m taking their lead!!
Thanks again :)

miki gParticipantHi Pat. I really like this shot & especially the compositional angle of the model and the lighting. A portrait should however show a person as they are & if she has freckles, show them, especially if she is happy with them. Personally, I think that there is too much photoshopping by commercial photographers these days to make the person look how the photographer would like them to look rather than how they are in reality.
Great work. Keep it up.lousyParticipantThanks Miki, I take your response on board and really appreciate all input. I think I’ll try another and post it later.

lousyParticipantHi folks and especially to the people that have alredy posted on this image.
I have included below the same image using levels-curves and sharpen. No skin toning whatsoever.Has my daughter grounds for complaint??? :)
Pat.
AnonymousParticipantIsabellaParticipanthonestly i dont think there’s anything wrong with her real face at all, the freckles are part of her and they are not at all ugly. the first image is not unattractive either, i think the issue is just that it doesnt look like her.
probably a magazine would prefer the first and i think you did a good job with the processing, so as a before and after example if you were looking to show what you can do with an editing suite I say well done!
lousyParticipantThanks once again John17, and Isabella, your comments are most appreciated.
