Fire Performance
-
JohnParticipant
Hey all I was asked to photograph some friends of mine doing a fire performance (you know juggling fire batons and all that stuff.) Unfortunately was shot on a green in a housing estate (mine lol) so there is some light bleed. But this is the first one there are 3 performers in this one. Let me know what you think.
joe_elwayParticipantReally cool effect. I always heard fire looked amazing on a slow shutter shot … almost liquid. I never tried it but now it’s on my list. It’s got a great magical feel. It’s like a movie special effect.
As you can probably tell (seeing as I never post any shots with people in them) this aint what I shoot. So it’s probably not right for me to C&C. I’d probably make a right mess of this … in fact, I know I would. I just can’t shoot anything with people in it. Also, it’s easier to compose after you’ve taken the shot rather than before. Hopefully you’ll get another attempt at this because you nearly got something really, really hot.
But … I wonder how cool would the shot look if you were more to the right so the performer was more in shot. Even at a slow shutter, their “ghost” beside the fire might look really cool. It’s a pity some of the shot is cropped on the top and right. Maybe a wider shot next time around now you know what to expect? There’s quite a bit of blow out in the middle … I don’t know how you’d meter for that other than the old “suck it and see” method.
earthairfireParticipantGreat subject.
Joe’s suggestion is a good one (get the person more in shot). Try getting a sunrise or something behind them, to to cast the subject into shadow. I got some great shots with strobe poi (the slightly less dangerous option to fire poi shown here) on the beach, early one morning.

JohnnyMcMillanParticipantFire is sooooooo much fun….not advisable to do it inside as we found out….didn’t burn anything…just got very dizzy and laughed ALOT!
JohnParticipantIt is great fun. The lads doing the Poi show could not do half there show as the Wind Picked up to dangerous levels. This is the only shot of butterfly wheel. This involves 2 people 1 forming the wheel you see while the other does a butterfly shape. The one holding the whell slowly falls to his back. In complete dark it looks like a butterfly is pushing down a wheel. Was way to windy though
