First attempt…

kenhParticipant
Folks, all comments welcome – I want to get into the Macro end of things – this is the first take that for me…
BrickeeParticipantNot a bad first try Ken. Azelias are tricky to shoot. I would try setting your apature # up about two stops and your metering down to -2/3 and see what happens.
I am Far from an expert at this stuff but I find this tends to improve my shot when I get results LIke you have here.Jim

nfl-fanParticipantIt’s hard to determine the point of focus in this shot. Some of the stamens and water drops are in focus but it moves you around about trying to find out what the focus point is supposed to be.
If you’re trying to get 3 flowers heads into a single shot then I think you need to decrease your aperture size (increase your F value) to get all 3 heads in focus and sharp. If you’re going to go after just one flower head then you can increase your aperture (lower your F value) to as low an F values that’ll allow you to go after a very specific point of focus within that one flower head, usually the stamen tips.
Might be worthwhile posting the lens and settings used.

Thanks John,
the numbers were f/5.6, 1/180s, ISO200, 18-55mm kit lens with total of 1×3 macro lens attachs.
I thought I was focussed on the cente of the right hand flower; but I see what you mean about the focus being all over the place!
(have I invented new macro techniques ? :D8)
nfl-fanParticipantIf you’re starting out with macro I’d say work on a single flower head.
I’m looking forward to my neighbours roses blossoming soon and lots of bees around looking for pollen, can often make a nice shot. Here’s a sample from back in the day… I’ve focused on the bee here and let the flower go out of focus https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?t=11897. I can’t remember if this was taken with a dedicated macro lens or an 18-55mm kit lens with a close-up fitting.
