First attempt at band-gig photography
-
AlessiaParticipant
Hi there, I had lots of fun, shooting this band and I was thinking to do it again (with other bands, of course    )
I’d be happy if some expert would give me some C&C
thankssssssssssssssssssssss :)CooksterParticipantHi Alessa,
The background in this venue is quite distracting.
The shots of the subject themselves are ok, fine balance of shutter speed for movement and ambient lighting, I’m not a big fan of flash and its difficult if the bands lighting is limited/non-existant.
I like the expression in the last one, musicians make great faces and poses especially drummers and guitarists soloing.
This is a difficult environment as it can be hard to include the audience.
I’m sure the band liked these

AlessiaParticipantSean, thanks very much for your comment/suggestion! really appreciated!

a.pandrews2000ParticipantHi Alessa,
I agree with Sean in relation to flash and the background. Its very rare a band will allow you to use flash. My guess at settings looking at the venue would be to set your camera to manual, iso 1600 and aperture to 1.8 or 2.8. Also spot meter and set your shutter speed to correctly expose. Saying that the min. shutter speed you should be shooting around 1/60 sec. Regarding the clutter in the background you can crop your photos tighter. This would also improve the composition.

AlessiaParticipantthebigbejaysusMemberNothing much to add here except to say that I quite like the last two the most. The b/w quality is excellent and you do a good job at capturing the gig atmosphere well in these photos.
AlessiaParticipantoberonParticipantSome nice shots, try and zone in on the musicians like you have done in the 2nd and 3rd pictures especially…The background can be a bit distracting so as mentioned already a tight crop would work well, or depending on the lens you are using, try and adjust your aperture to get a blurry background, and good depth of field…What camera and lens are you using? Good shots though..!
AlessiaParticipantOberon, thanks for your comments and suggestion. I used a canon 40d, I tried to shoot with the 17-85 but I had not enough large aperture so I ended up shooting with the 50mm 2.5 and it worked quite well :)
cheers
