First Attempt Window Light Portrait
-
tracey mMember
Hey guys, I’m finally getting into photography. This is my first attempt using my camera on manual. I tried to work with natural window light with my daughter posing in front of a window blind and my other daughter holding an improvised reflector! Taken with my old Canon 400D.
Critique more than welcome :)
miki gParticipantHi Tracey m.
The highlights on the right in #1 & on the left in #2 are blown a bit, but this isn’t a major problem. The eye contact is great in both. My only suggestion would be to move back slightly so as not to crop the top of the head & I would go for a slightly lower shooting angle in #2. That said, I think you have done an excellent job on these. Well donetracey mMemberThanks for the feedback miki g. Yes, I see now what you mean by the lighting on each side of the images. I may have overdone it with the reflector or even in photoshop. I was so busy trying to shoot with the light that it never occurred to me to change my angle. I stood head to head for both shots but it is definitely something that I know now to work on next time.
JMac-2006ParticipantHi Tracey
I think you did a great job on these, the crop doesn’t bother me i think it adds to the impact, I particularly like the second shot as the eyes and eye lashes stand out, also the slight smile in #2 compare to the shy #1. only tiny flaw is couple stray hairs on #2 showing as highlight on the girls right side neck and again over the left side you could easily clone out now.
Well done!
ps. what lens did you use?
tracey mMemberThanks Jason, I never would have noticed the hairs which means I really need to train my eye better!!
I used the 18-55mm that came with the camera (just after it had a fall off the bed .. scary moment!)
JMac-2006Participanti know its funny the things you notice the more you practise, i just wondered on the lens what focal length was it set to was it at the wide end 18mm or nearer the 55mm

Kinda embarrassing but I really don’t know. I do remember trying to zoom in quite a bit so probably nearer the 18mm. I have lots to learn :)

Check the EXIF data, it´s written there. And tell your daughter that she´s got nice eyes.
