First Holga Pics

Hi everyone
Have just put my first 2 rolls of film through a new Holga 120N. Thats the one with the plastic lens
I bought it from a Hong Kong dealer via ebay for €9.00. Postage was €12.00. Customs didn’t like the look of the box so they opened it, sniffed and then resealed it. Post delayed by about 5 days
The film was Fuji NPH 400 for colour and Kodak Tmax 400 for bw
Both films were about 4 years out of date
Am delighted with the pics and love the simplicity of the camera. Sunny or cloudy switch, and portrait , group, or landscape setting and the option of a 6×4.5 or 6×6 format
The film was processed and burnt to disc by the local 1hr photo place for €5.00 per film which is great value.
A border was added from a photoshop Holga border action from smaragd

Very nice set of shots. No 2 would be my favorite of the nice bunch.
No 2 is just very nicely composed and works well in the square. Colours look nice and the sky is great
Very good quality for a plastic lens.
Have never tried colour film in my Holga :idea:I like the first one of the bunch. There is a very discernible sweet spot with regards to focus.
The second one is very nice too.
Not sure I like the aftermarket borders – I thought there was something un-Holga-like about them and then I read your description about using Photoshop. Not sure if you are using the mask in the camera or not, but you can get actual Holga borders if you don’t use the mask (You will need to tape up inside the camera where the film travels to avoid scratching though).

Dave……. dont really know what you mean about the mask. ( I am using a rectangular gadget in front of the film that sizes the negative to 6×4.5) Is there something extra in the camera or something adapted for it? The border i’m using is a bit too obvious now you mention it. Any idea where i can get the borders you mention and do you know where i can see some examples?

By mask, I do mean the rectangular thing in the camera that gives you the 6×4.5 sized frame. Now that I think of it, after removing the mask you will no longer get a 6X4.5 photo since the dimensions will be more square (approx 6×6). The mask just pulls out and you should have actually got two (the other being 6×6) with your camera..
In any case, here are a few shots I have taken without the mask so you can see what it looks like.
You should note that every Holga is different as you can see in this one (this is actually shot on a WOCA, the precursor to the 120G series of Holgas).
As far as photoshop borders go, I can’t help I’m afraid.

I like all three, but prefer the colour pictures, I just think there is something really nice about colour film from Holga.
I’d agree with Martin, about the composition in the second being better suited to the square. But, the colour in the first is just lovely.

You got a great price on developing and scanning.
I have a roll of colour in mine at the minute but so far i have only shot black and white.
As for the masks i always shoot with the 6×6 mask in. I don’t really like the 6×4.5 format in medium format, but thats a personal thing.
I haven’t shot without the mask so I can’t comment on that side of things

Realising now where that focusing is best. Seems to be about 100 to 150 feet away and then the blur comes in, though in the rock pool shot the clarity is from my feet

geoffThese shots are fantastic Geoff. Hard to believe they were taken with a €20 camera. The reflections on the water shots look insanely sharp for a Holga.
Did you have to do any/much processing in PS after scanning?
Can’t wait for mine to arrive now..although I doubt I’ll be getting many like this for the first while ;-)
Dave..those shots of yours are fantastic as well. There’s obviously a technique with these cameras and hopefully I’ll learn it quickly :D

Very little done in PS. Just a touch of levels, a crop to make them square if needed and a play around with a blurred border.
Oh yes and just a very little vignette. About 5 minutes at the most.
I must have got a lens made on a Tuesday because it is lovely and sharp in the middle. Just working out the distance where its at its best for the landscape setting.
The colour is dreamy and thats probably because the film is old well out of date.Nice images, like the colour imags especially, good lighting helps and I think you had this on the day, the holga needs it. It looks a lovely lens. Remember the sunny and shady are the same but keep them either left or right and not in the middle, look through the back of the camera with the back off to see what happens , use the “B” setting. I tape mine so that it sticks on sunny.

Yes it was a pet day, though when we got to the top of Sheep’s Head the mist came rolling in from the sea for about 1/2 hour.
Words from a master wont go unheeded. Will give it a try tomorrow.
