First images from the LUBITEL

Ran a roll of Fujichrome Provia 400f slide film through my recently aquired Lubitel 166B.
This was my first roll through it so I didnt quite know how they would come out.Thanks to the Martins for the info . . . https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?t=29499
The film was cross processed by my usual lab at no extra cost !

f22 ~ 1/250th approx. Film expired 11-2004 [no post processing]
Flipping hell Alan!!! These are brilliant! Really, really like them. The colours are lovely,
and you’ve done really well with the exposure, light meter?Had a look at the pictures on your site, love the one of your dog :)
Where did you buy the expired film?

I got the film from e-bay. Pack of 5 x 120 format for about €18.00 !
I used the Gossen light meter I got recently specifically for this little ‘Project’
It was accurate enough but the days I took these were really bright
and the settings on the camera were at their MAX! f22 & 1/250th some with f16 though
with iso 400 obviously, might have to get a ND filter !I find the combination of really sunny weather and X process slide film good. Overcast
days dont give the same results, and that conclusion is from running 1 roll of x pro film :lol:my observations anyway.
I did a lot of film photography back in the days starting out and I never shot slide film ever!
So 1st roll of slide film shot through my 1st TLR ! great fun.

Yes, I’d agree, they’re lovely-
but hardly low fi at all, at this scale-
they look good edge to edge-
how do they look at a larger scale?The compositions are great, that’s what makes them,
although the processing is adding something too-

Lo-Fi . . . Hhhhmmmmm I know what you mean.
I have read a bit on the Lubitel and it does produce some
very good non-lo-fi shots, but it is a plastic body with a very
nasty rear door. I was fearing that all of these would have been
fogged to fheck.I had to seal around the rear door similar to the AV-1 project

There is a bit of a light leak though in the top right hand corner
which can be seen on some of the other images, im not worried about it though.Well there is a lot more exposure control on this compared to the holga anyway :)
The full size image looks to be very grainy and sharp’ish all over that could be my focusing
though. The viewfinder is not fully ground glass but just a circle in the middle and the pop
up shade has a silly little pop out magnifiying glass for focusing, a bit annoying really.Ah I think it is lo-fi, it is a nice little unit but the build quality is a bit higgelty piggelty :lol:

Lovely images. Well done.
The Lubi is definitely not a toy camera, the images are often great. But are Lubi’s Lo-Fi? yes definitely IMHO
Love the colours, as already said really sharp images and exposures are accurate, the processing reminds me of the old Agfa slide films. Lubitel always had a great reputation for good quality images at around f8.
Every time I look at that second picture I think of the film, ‘No Country For Old Men’

As a person who owned and used a Lubitel for 20 years or more I can tell you that although they may be made of cheap
light metal and plastic they certainly DO NOT deliver Lo-Fi images.
At f8-f16 or so you would be hard pushed to choose the images from those taken with a Hasselblad, Rollei or Mamiya.
The only difference is that the Lubitel lens is a bit soft at the edges if your enlargements are above say 12 x 12 and it
doesn’t handle sun flare as well as it might if it were a more expensive lens.
I sold mine to Mark for a fiver :cry: …Jesus I must be mad.

Your colours came out much better, more subtle.
I’m wondering if it was the lens or the lab.
Mine were also posted without any potato-chopping, but my colours were very saturated, not much hue or tone gradation.Martin
The film was/is over 4 years put of date, that might play a part.
I did like the colouring in your own results though, more saturation.
I think I would have liked a more dramatic look to them, edging towards
the look of your ones.The one on the site of the tall tree doesnt have much of a x process to it IMO . . .
