First IR shots with converted camera

looks like theres a focusing problem with my sigma 10-20mm, but the rest are working fine. had also heard of a similar focusing problem with the canon 12-22. the 17-40 works fine. i wanted to redo wyoming mill and compare the two shots, but its raining that fell through. went out to the field behind our house during a break in the rain, got this shot:
100% crop (lower right, not center):
did the channel switching in photoshop since i couldn’t figure out how to do it in lightroom:

randomwayMemberIf you straightened the first and last one, I would say, these are the best pair of photos that I’ve seen from you. I like the unusual and imperfect images. The close-up one in the middle looks a bit noisy? soft? I’m not sure, but it’s not really eyecatching. The first one works really really well with that tone and composition. I think, it was worth investing in IR… Keep shooting!

thanks. all three are from the same photo. the middle one that is soft/noisy is a 100% crop of the photo above it. it does look crooked to me, but me thinks its straight cause i used the ruler tool in lightroom and in ps. ran it along that horizon line between the small shrubs and the medium sized trees… might also look crooked cause i was standing on the corner of the field and the rows further back start to curve away from me on the right side.
the first one really reminds me of a nuclear holocaust..
bethDenverDollParticipantBeth..
Considering you told me the weather conditions when we were chatting earlier, I am amazed by your result!
Cant wait to see what you bring us when you have ideal light.
I can’t decide if I love the first or the third best. There is just something nice about that icy color today. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s over 100degrees here, but I am lovin the blues.
Great job girl!

Beth, I had the same thoughts as randomway. The type of noise/artifacts/sharpening in that crop is something I would expect to see in a 200%+ enlargement. I’m not an expert in IR by any means, so unless there’s something about the process that causes this, it looks like there’s excessive compression/sharpening going on. What jpeg settings did you use in the camera and what jpeg settings did you use in Photoshop?
Dave
jb7Participantbest of luck with the new camera-
Were you inside taking this?
There’s quite a pronounced vertical streak near the centre of the frame-I can’t make out what it is-This reminds me of one of those American military cemeteries,
although the planting is not so regimented here-
It might be worth trying to find a viewpoint where the rows are tidier, maybe-
A little more height might help too-
Its amazing there isn’t more discussion about step-ladders in the equipment section-Good to see its working-
although I think I’m more of a fan of mono ir in general-
the false colour effect would have to be considered shot by shot-j
bethParticipantthis was taken in the backyard. no need for stepladders or anything like that here, i wasn’t really concerned with getting a compositionally good shot, just wanted to make sure the camera was in working order since i got it back the night before. ..
the streak i think might be glare from the sun since the ray is pointing directly toward the sun (and there are a few others that are fainter to the left of it that look more like the traditional light rays you see) and it didn’t show in any of the other shots i got. i’m not sure why its curved at the bottom, but this is the only shot where i had this show up. only took two of the field, the rest were of grass, trees, the house, etc.. the other one of the field i had a big exposure problem with..shot in raw. hastily sharpened in lightroom (which might be the noise you were talking about in the 100% crop), i usually sharpen in ps cs2 but wasn’t planning on using that program. the one with the brown sky was converted to maximum sized jpg, srgb. went back, tried to figure out channel switching in ps.. didn’t figure it out so i dropped the brown sky version into cs2, switched the r & b channels and saved as another version.
bethRavenAshMemberThe first shot is my favourite.
Has that space age feel to it.
Looking forward to seeing some more. :)
