MartinParticipant
Hello All,
First post in this forum. I’m normally a landscape person.
Went to the Zoo yesterday. here are few of my pics, let me know what you think:-)
All taken on a Nikon D200 and a Nikon 70-300ED Lens iso 400 mostly
Enjoy
MLoGillParticipantThere are probably too many in the one post for people to fully critique Martin ..
That said .. I’m loving the Hippo and the Penguin doing the back-stroke :)

ExpresbroParticipantWow Martin. I think every one of those shots is good enough to be given it’s own post. I love the first chimp shot and the second red panda shot in particular and I really like the way you’ve included a little action in almost all of them.
Excellento!!
Robbie
8)Edit: Oops..it’s not a chimp…it’s a Baboon I think…silly me.
joe_elwayParticipantpositronMemberI really like the fourth one as it is, I think thats the better than the rest. Some of them, last one for instance, could use a bit more color and contrast, IMHO.
MartinParticipantThanks for the reply all,
Sorry for posing so many in hindsight i should have posted maybe two at a time. I thought as they were Zoo pic’s and that it is sort of cheating that not many people would comment on them. I wont do it again promise:-)
positron: Yes some of them could do with a bit of colour i’ll try to bumps it up a bit and see what they look like
joe_elway: Sorry for posting so many. You said they are a mixed bag which ones do you not like, I rarely photo animals so any help and suggestions would be great
Expresbro: Thanks for the comments i think these are my favorites also. Yes i tried to add a bit of action i think it worked in a few of them
LoGill: Thanks for the comments. The Penguins were my favorite animal in the Zoo on Sunday they were really zipping around the pool having a great laugh
Thanks again for the replies
MartinrandomwayMemberReally nice photos! No. 4 is the wildest, so I’d pick that one as my fave.
Not Pete the blokeParticipantMartin
Dont apologise for posting several shots – people do it all the time. If people like them they will comment, and I am confident you will get lots of feedback on these!
No 1 – I would crop in from left side and bottom to remove some of the highlights in the water. These are the brightest areas of the photo and are distracting from the subject. No 2 – Great shot with the diagonal branch and the wide eyes of the little monkey. Not sure I would change anything!
No 3 – What a pity he didnt look at you! The branch on left hand side is a bit distracting.
No 4 – Luvvit
No 5 – Something about it doesnt appeal, but cant quite put my finger on it.
No 6 – Have a look at merv’s similar shot in his LIPF panel. His angle of view is better and makes the shot.
No 7 – Possibly the weakest of the bunch in my opinion.
No 8 – I love the composition/content but I feel that you havent realised the true potential of this shot. Maybe boost colours in the fur coat, boost saturation and contrast etc. I think it would be worth re-visiting and taking your time on.
Overall, these show that you have a very good eye for a shot. Keep it up!

DenverDollParticipantWhat a pleasure to pore over these! All of them are delightful, it’s a little trip to some great views at the zoo!
I am no expert, so I can’t critique, will leave that to those who can.
All are worth a peek on their own, but if I choose just one……………….
The hippo has just melted my heart :)Sharon
ValentiaMemberI love the 4th. Nice selection. With all the good zoo shots I’m getting an uncontrollable urge to break my vow. HELP!
MartinParticipantThanks all again for your comments. Number 4 looks like most peoples favorite
Valentia: “uncontrollable urge to break my vow” I presume you mean by this that you have a vow to not go to Zoo’s. I am the same I am not into Zoos either it was a bit of decision for me to go to the zoo my self (only been a few times in the 33 years i am on the planet). I think the monkeys, zebras, seals and penguins are happy but the cats look totally bored and i do think it is cruel having these type of animals in Zoos but some animals are happy so it is worth visiting just these maybe.
DenverDoll/Sharon: Thanks for the Comments the hippo shot is a nice one. Its hard to get Hippo shots in Dublin Zoo as they always stay under the water so i was happy to get this one
Brandyman: Thanks for your comment this is the type of feedback that i like most. Thanks for going down through all the images much appreciated. I tried to pump up the colours etc in the last one. I found it hard to get some good colour into the picture with out it looking fake. Only new to photoshop being from a slides/projector background so not used to post processing yet.
randomway: Thanks for the comment
Thanks again all
Martinjoe_elwayParticipantI like the second Firecat shot and the Orang shot (which needs some processing to give it some “umph”). I’m not crazy about the others. As I said … way to much to comment on all at once.

Thanks joe_elway I know i posted to many i wont do it again:-) Thanks for the comments. I updated the picture of the Orang to give it a bit more colour make sure you hit refresh or else you will not get the updated version. I’m new to photoshop so when i tried to give it more colour it started to look fake (tried to use curves and up the saturation). Must go on a photo shop course
Thanks again
MartinAliParticipantGrahamBParticipantMartin,
I’m not going to comment on them all because to be honest I’m
far too lazy.
They are great shots and to be proud of. the only one I’m not a fan of
is the first one. It’s lacking a little bit of detail that takes away from it.
perhaps if it was posted on it’s own I wouldn’t have noticed but beside the other
i think it looks a little weak.
Apart from that though it is a great series of shot.
Get them printed mate. They should look really good.
