Hello all, this is my first post…im new to photography and dont really have the proper equipment…at the minute im using a CANON IXUS 80 (i know this isnt anything compared to what everyone else is using) but really want to go down the route of getting a Digital SLR!
This picture was taken in Alvor, Portugal in the summer of 2008! i would love to hear some feedback please! Thanks in advance! :D
MallachtParticipanttoasty37MemberwirepicParticipantI’ll give it my best shot seeing as no one came back to you on the pic.
I think the boat on it’s own with just some of the beach might have made a better photo. Some of the buildings and other boats in the background are a bit distracting for me. Perhaps it’s the strong colours on the buildings. Exposure is good. You’ve kept the detail well in the shadows. Not easy in strong light.
MartinOCParticipantWelcome to the site Toasty.
I think wirepic said it, there are two things that draw the eye in the photo, the boat and the buildings and it is better to have 1 thing as the main focus, with other things leading towards it or at least not distracting too much.
The colour seems to be a bit off (but I wasn’t there!), you might try colour correction in photoshop if you have it.Martin
PS check out this (Magnum photographer) guy’s point & shoot stuff

the photo was taken at sunset which is giving everything an odd orange colour :) i must read up on how to correct it in photoshop, i have CS2.
thanks very much for all your advice, i hope to have more photos soon…and im saving for a good beginner SLR.
This forum is such an inspiration, alot of incredible photos!Once again thanks very much!
snaphappyMemberHey toasty i reckon you have the makings of a strong shot here the boat makes a lovely subject but the backround is cluttered so the easy way to get around this is to lower your angle of shooting bend/kneel or even lie down the lower you get the less cluttered backround you would get and it would be replaced with photogenic blue sky
snaphappyMemberafter looking at it again I see it was taken in lovely warm evening light I would change my angle of shooting to the right a few degrees so as not to cut the sweeping shadow the boat casts images look cropped or cut if the focal point is not allowed fully display itself (shadows and all) you will find it really adds to your composition and just sits easy on the eye
