My first rally with D200. I came late and hadn’t good position.
    C&C welcome.

you said it Roberto, not a good position-
unless of course one of the drivers were to help you out by rolling it,
in which case it would have been perfect position,
but you can’t always rely on their cooperation.

I used to shoot rallies myself years ago, and its all about setting up for the first car through.

looks like you were losing the light too,
might have needed to wind up the iso a bit,
to hell with the noise, just make the thing sharp.
Panning doesn’t work so well if the subject rotates away from you during exposure.
    and the tape doesn’ help-

and maybe its all about the car, so a tight crop would be better…

still, that 5fps is nice though,
roll of film every seven seconds in another life…

well done for putting them up,
    sorry to sound so negative,

Hey Roberto, is that the Clare rally that was on today? I was there too! Will post some images in a wee while…

Yes, it’s from the Clare rally.
    Thanks for the comments.

Which stage were you at? You got some nice wheels-up action anyway. I wish I’d got the programme earlier than yesterday and had time to drive the stages and work out where the humps and powerslide corners were. As it was, I got some at the start line in Tuamgraney, some at the bridge and lefthander near the Feakle-Scariff road, and a load up on the mountain behind Flagmount.

    Gunning it out of Tuamgraney.

Drifting it out near Feakle. Gotta love Escort mkIIs and their tail-happy ways.

    Full on on the mountain.

I could really have done with a 70-200 f2.8L though. The tele shots were done with an ancient manual focus zoom via an adaptor, and out of about 300 images I got maybe a dozen decentish ones (i.e. reasonably sharp and well-framed and capturing the speed). Dunno if that’s par for the course with motorsports or I just need more practice ;)

    Excellent :) Two cars i would love, Type R and a 1.9 GTI. Well, realistically a T-16 :D

    Nice shots Steve.
I was somewhere on the Tulla road.
My plan was to go to Lough Atorick but the road was closed and I end up to shut the rally.

But Ali, old rear wheel drives make better photos ;) Almost every Escort I saw was going round a corner sideways. The little front wheel drives and 4WD Subarus and Mitsubishis were behaving themselves altogether too well…

Thanks. I took hundreds but only a few were worth uploading. Back to the old digital vs film debate, if we dare. In my film days I’d never have dared shoot ten rolls on the offchance of getting a dozen nice shots (and after a day of it, I find it hard to believe anybody can shoot perfect motorsport pics every shot: damn things just move too fast and all you can do is use AI Servo focus and burst shooting and hope some work).

Lough Atorick’s lovely, and also in my backyard. It’s absolutely stunning on a winter’s morning with low light. Let me know if you fancy meeting up for a wild lonely backroads day shooting anywhere in East Clare. I’m always up for meeting fellow enthusiasts and talking bollocks about cameras and lenses ;)

Now that’s a car! Sadly, all the Irish ones rusted to bits ten years ago ;)

Don’t i know .. :) all the good ones are gone :| sniffle. I was thinking of bringing in a limited edition ST 205 Carlo Sainz (RC) from Japan a while ago but
i settled for a beetle. What the hell was i thinking. I’ve so many cars on my wish list. A G60 Corrado would be a nice road going car too.
Unfortunately as i get older , the cars always move down in the priority list. :(
