here we go, my first roll developed home…
it is hanging in the shower, drying all night long, will see tomorrow how are the negatives…
i’m little bit sad because i’ve wasted one roll before this one… it was a roll full of pics taken with my new yashica… i had some problems inserting the film on the reel… after 10 minutes i’ve decided to use it as training roll :P
second attempt was all ok as you can see :)

ilford hp5+, taken with holga, dev’d with studional 1+15 for 4min.

i could not manage to bring the dev bath at 20C…. i think it was something like 27 when i started, it was late and i didnt want to wait more for the liquid to cool down… question: what happens in this case? if the temperature of the dev bath is higher than 20C i should develop for <4minutes? is the temperature also important for both stop and fix bath?

i will post something tomorrow… and maybe develop a 3rd roll taken on the yashica :)

Well done on the first role, deving your first role gives a nice feeling of accomplishment. The negs look nice from the picture here

Film is normally devd at 20c or 24c others do hotter temps to. The effect of hotter development is that it brings the dev times down. Cant say for sure as I always dev at 20c but I reckon if it was higher you might get a bit more grain and contrast but don’t quote me on that….

Its very important for consistency to dev at the same temp all the time. As for stop bath I just guess the temperature by sticking my finger in the water, I sort of know what 20c feels like now. For the fix I always have it between 20c and 22c

Well done, first of many im sure…

thanks martin,

i’ve scanned some negs.
first one has a bump due to my inexperience i think i’ve forced the film too much and this caused the bump… (it is also out of focus but this is due to the focus guess on the Holga):

They look good, Angelo.

ps. You might want to buy a bottle of shower gel, looks like that one is almost empty.

Real nice Angelo. You still got good results even at the higher temps. Good work !

Zoltan, those are the chemical bottles!!!!
BTW, 2 120 rolls dev’d now and i’ve already consumed half bottle of developer (125ml):

i think i will need to buy bottles of 1l :P
which dev do you use guys?

Use R09 Special at 1:30 and double your development time. Its a fine developer but most of the manufactuer’s suggested development times for 1:15 are too short for accuracy.

Really like the last few there-
Good results you’re getting-

I suppose it doesn’t matter how you do things, as long as you can get repeatable good results…

27ยบ is hot, is that straight from the cold tap?

If you find yourself in that position again, do a search for a time/temperature chart,
it’ll show the adjustments needed.
Though, try to stay away from dev times shorter than 5 mins-

thefizz: i’ll try that thanks!!

joseph: it was a mistake, i filled the cilinders with water coming from the tap, thinking it was not too hot :P
then i mixed the chemicals and measured the temperature… doh! 2nd time i firstly measured the temp AND THEN MIXED :P you do stupid things when you are not experienced. btw when i realized it was too hot i replaced the water in the wash basin with very cold water but after 15 minutes temperature only decreased of 2-3 degrees… it was late in the night. like 2. didnt want to wait more. i said, who cares, let’s see what funny thing happens at this temp :P

i’m getting excited btw, cant stop, developed second roll yesterday, shots taken with the yashica mat 124g, scanning now, looking even good than the holga shots, will post soon :)

joseph: you are saying stay away from dev times <5minutes... so it's 4minutes 20C (studional 1+15) bad?

thanks for the suggestions!

There’s a possibility of uneven development at shorter times.

You can adjust dilution to get the times back over 5 mins at higher temps,
if you find you don’t have control of the temperature-
useful for Ireland, and other tropical countries-

At shorter times, you can try pre-soaking your film in water (at the same temperature as the dev) for a couple of minutes.
it should help speed up to even things out-

Thanks Joseph.

Here are some of the first shots taken with the yashica mat 124g. The full set is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pallotron/sets/72157623447613717/detail/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;

I didnt touch them all, just some curve/level adjustment, rotation, a bit of sharpen mask on some of them, and some dust cleaning.
cant decide which one i like most, maybe #1 and #3.

Great set there Angelo . . . very well done on them.

I particularly like #1 of the last set!!

I use Ilford Ilfosol 3 to develop my negs and I’m still tricking around
with Caffenol.

Really? Does it work? :P
Can you post some examples?
