First Roll with a Holga
-
MartinOCParticipant
The first two here are underexposed, but seemed to come out ok. I forgot about the aperture setting and it was a grim day.
The first is a straight scan, the second I lifted the shadows a bit in PP.
The third just need a rotation.
It was a roll of Tri-X 120Martin
An old playground, it didn’t seem like a place for kids though.
This is a new communication tower, being built, I shot the reflection in a river as the field of view wasn’t large enough for the building itself.
Reminded me a bit of Metropolis.
thefizzParticipantEddieParticipantWell done Peter great choice of subject especially like the first one. They generally print well at grade 5 regardless of exposure. The two F stops cloudy and sunny are the same unless you have a modified Holga. I would generally lock the sunny or cloudy dial one or the other as if it moves to the middle and you don’t notice it during a shoot you can get a large portion of the image unexposed.
aoluainParticipantlove all 3 Martin ! the last is impressive I have to say.
1 and 2 are also nice, the light objects in the centre with
the spooky shadows really suit the holga as mentioned.Did you get a new Holga? I beleive the new ones have 2
working apertures, not lke the old ones which have only 1
proper aperture and a silly engineering mistake of a second.nice lovely results from the first roll.
MartinOCParticipantThanks all for the replies, and the tip about printing on grade 5, very helpful.
I got a new one so it is a bit more cutting edge than the older ones, even though I got 120N
I did a bit of reading on the Holga and it seems that quality has improved.
The door clips are a bit better formed and I think there is no need for extra taping.
There is a functioning aperture plate now, so 2 working settings.
There is no issues with the neg masks, they seem to work fine.Happy days, now I have to think about a project for it…
thefizzParticipantMarkKeymasterGreat results Martin ! Good to see yet more Holga work on show.
Can’t wait to see what else you capture in Japan :)
MartinParticipantjessthespringerParticipantGreat work Martin!
Love the look of the third, thought for a moment that you’d pulled off some kind of specular inverted extreme headstand double exposure, and was then ever so slightly disappointed to learn it was a reflection (you’re in extreme territory now, big things will be expected from you), doesn’t take away from the picture though, very good work!
Like Eddie said, regardless of exposure they print up nicely at harder grades, I’ll add they also make good lith prints.
Looking for a project? Looks like you have one there, with the playgrounds?
Sinead
MartinOCParticipantThanks all, I’ll have to go find some more scary playgrounds……..

The holga has been improved? Oh thats a pity ;(
if it’s any consolation Peter it doesn’t have a “face detection” feature yet ;-)
Martin
DenverDollParticipantthink I’d have to tape it up a bit just for comfort….good luck Martin..you will adore it.
