I’ve found the Ice thing didn’t do that great a job of removing dust marks..and dust and fluff seems to be totally attracted to the scanner glass… :D

Are you using colour or mono…ICE won’t work with black and white negs.

I don’t use gloves, perhaps I should but they may be a source of lint.

The negative tweezers are a bit different than regular ones. They are more flat and mine are metal. I don’t think that being flat is such a positive thing because if they hold any part of the exposed negative they still can easily scratch it. Perhaps plastic would have been better to buy.

I also use a microfibre cloth and blower as part of my kit to try to get the best from the negs.

I don’t use any of the extra functions, I even turn off unsharp mask (but it keeps sneaking back on). I prefer to do any processing later in PS ‘by hand’.
Generally I don’t sharpen unless I’ve removed the grain as sharpening can increase graininess alot.
I’m still learning too, just have the scanner a few weeks, but have had the opportunity to use it quite a bit.

Btw I use “healing” or “spot healing” in PS for the lint marks and odd spots.

In this case it’s Colour..but I’ll be using both. I’ll bear that in mind.

I must do some research on using ICE and the Dust removal tool. I’ve literally just done it as basically as I can..although I did scan in Pro Mode as it wont let you do a quick scan for 120 negs. I have to get my head around all the different resolutions. I scanned those 120’s at 1200…but I scanned a really small little picture that my wife had for years in one of those little red viewfinder things that were all the rage back in the 60’s and 70’s.

I think it was what is called a Positive..as it was transparent like a negative but the colours were normal, not reversed.

This thing really was tiny..less than a quarter of the size of a 35mm negative. I scanned it at 3200 and I was amazed at the detail I got. I printed two on an A4 sheet of glozzy paper and was really amazed at how it turned out. It was a bit dirty, presumably the original had marks on it, but the picture was really good. A quick brush up in Photoshop and it looked great.

I was really impressed and so was herself..she thinks the scanner was a great buy now..hehe!!

Yeah Martin, I noticed that too with the Unsharp Mask…everytime I turned it off it seemed to switch itself back on.

I must pick myself up a Giotto blower…mad that I haven’t already I know. I wasn’t sure which cloth to get..it does mention about cleaning the scan window with a soft dry cloth in the maintenance instructions.

That link that Seoirse put up had some good tips for general scanning which I hadn’t realised…like the curl on the film. When I got my negs back they were on one roll and curled up…so now I know to make sure the curl is not leading down to the glass.

There is almost as much to learn with scanning as there is with the darn camera itself..more actually. Then again..I guess it’s just a big digital camera anyway really..

    Good stuff Robbie, well done.
    Love the landscape stuff.

Good practice for the toy camera day and print exchange. Signed up yet?

Well for the camera day defo Sinead…can anyone do the print thing? Never done one before..

These are fantastic for a first roll. Well done!

The second one is excellent, although there is not much interest in the picture, but it has a good atmosphere. Very good for a toy camera.

As for the betterscanning holders.. I have a 120 holder with glass insert. It is definitely more solid and usable than the stock Epson holders. The glass is the best part, you can scan the very thin, curly negatives easily. Next time I’d go for the variable height mounting station thing, which can take 4×5’s and can be converted to do fluid mounting as well… that’s better value, looking back now.

Well done on the negs Robbie. Its always a good buzz to see what you get back.

The film holder is a bit tricky to use for sure. As is keeping the glass clean imo.
I’m going to get some lint free cotton gloves for handling the negs to help keep
    them clean…

I use the gloves, but still, dust is everywhere it seems. I even thought about scanning in the bathroom..

Thanks Zoltan…it’s encouraging to know that I..and more importantly, the camera, is capable of making half decent pics..so I’ll be a bit more adventurous with the subjects next outing..am really quite pleased with the first go :-) I’ll definitely have a serious look at the holder..the glass with the anti newton coating, or whatever it’s called does look interesting.

Mark..cheers…I must have a look online for gloves suitable for handling negs..there must be something specific out there.

Next step now is to have a go at developing my own negs. Cathal very kindly sent me on a Paterson Tank recently..so no excuse now :-)

I decided to deal with the dust issue by making bigger negatives.
It doesn’t eliminate dust, but I don’t have to magnify it as much-

Well, I hadn’t done one before either, until I did Josephs’. Yes, anyone can do the print thing. Just as long as the picture was shot on LoFi.

ps. The Holga picture of your little girl, on flickr, it’s lovely!
