First Street Post, Be Gentle…. Or Not!
-
jessthespringerParticipant
Met up with a few Photography buddies in Belfast today, bit wet for street photography so most of the afternoon was spent drinking coffee. Had a wee dander through the new Victoria Square shopping centre and took a few shots. I liked the light in this one.
C&C welcome.
Sinead.
MartinOCParticipantVery good stuff Sinead,
the technique is spot on, the coffee in your system must be the key.Martin
aoluainParticipantHey Sinead,
I like this one.
the movement adds a lot to this without the movement
it would be lacking something and almost boring.
The peocessing is similar to your “self portrait” and suits
the image.
i like the overexposed areas too it really works.Nice image.
Alan
nfl-fanParticipantSinead.. just to follow on our discussion from the F place.. there seems to be movement not only in the people but the surrounds too.. how did you manage this? Were you walking and shooting at the same time?
mgstParticipantReally like this the sense of movement in the people and the surroundings work very well together.
Mick
jessthespringerParticipantCheers all for comments, appreciated as always.
To answer your question nfl, yes I was walking, shot from the hip… must do that more often, only cropped a tiny wee bit off the edges!
Sinead.
MarkKeymasterSinead, this is great. Such alot of movement. Looks like shooting from the hip worked.
What camera were you using out of interest ?

 That comment really made me laugh! Sometimes here I see pictures that loads of people are raving about and I just can’t see it, so I guess your right opinions do differ and there is no accounting for taste.
I appreciate your honesty… Kinda reminded me of my mum though…Sometimes I show her things and she’ll say “huh! Don’t think much of that” and I know I might have something good
Thanks again, all comments appreciated.
Sinead.

Thats my way of knowing I have a good picture too!!
If your mammy dosen’t like it, chances are its spot on

When I read blunt, unconstructive comments like that I try, very hard, to bite my tongue… but inevitabley ended up saying something… or sometimes I merely ask myself “what purpose is it supposed to serve?” and say nothing.
In this case I’ll opt to say nothing…
Alan RossiterParticipantSaying nothing like that nfl is saying something…kinda philosophical, eh?
I’ll echo AK Carlows comment but let me develop it a little more. The shot is soft, it’s out of focus, it’s blurred and the highlights are blown to bejaysus. Now, before I have the henchmen on nfls avatar and a springer spaniel on my doorstep let me develop that a little further.
I’ve had a conversation with a member of PI on critique recently. If we were consistent with all images AK Carlow would be absolutely correct. But some images “break the rules” so much that they develop an interest all by themselves. This image isn’t what I’d strive to generate. That’s not by choice, but lack of the pre-shot thought process. If I accidentally captured it I would, as AK suggests, delete it.
But then when it’s presented by Sinead, and the accolades come rolling in you do need to question what are we trying to achieve when we hold a camera to our eye. Is it a precise replication of real life, or an artistic interpretation? A debate I’ve been having for some time but in the end of the day a unique, fresh approach such as this needs to be applauded.
Do I like it? Yes, it’s fine and quite a different approach, but doesn’t float my boat as much as it does others…maybe I need a new boat…
Alan
nfl-fanParticipantSaying nothing like that nfl is saying something
Exactly my intention…. a contradiction of sorts.
This is Street… blurred, soft, blown… sometimes these factors contribute to make something different… and in this case I think they do combine well. The dynamics, the movement, the composition, the tunnel of blown light… they work for me… it creates an atmosphere in the image… something different.
Some people can’t see past “nice and sharp” or “technically correct” (not saying thats the case with you Alan) but others like to think outside of the box.
I don’t have a problem with someone not liking something… but FFS be a little more constructive if you’ve something to say.
I never really thought of Street photography as something planned or premeditated… for me it’s completley reactionary type stuff so nothing is ever going to be perfect.
