First time trying Luminosity Masks
-
markst33Participant
taken near sunset at Howth Harbour. Trying out using luminosity masking to improve my landscape shots.
IsabellaParticipantit looks very nice.
i have never used luminosity masks.
it would be helpful (for me at any rate) to see a before shot for comparison. otherwise i dont know what has changed.
markst33ParticipantBMParticipantIsabellaParticipantwow, that is quite the transformation! very interesting indeed, definitely something worth doing.
shutterbugParticipantOk Mark you are nominated for the step by step instruction on luminosity masks! :D
markst33ParticipantOK Folks, bear in mind that I have only just started trying to get my head around this but the concept is this.
1. Open your image in PS
2. Go to the channels pallette
3. Click on the RED channel. (Reason is that this usually contains the most contrasty image)
4. Hold down CTRL (CMD) and click on the thumbnail in the RED channel. The marching ants should appear. Thisis your luminosity mask
5. Go back tot he layers pallette
6. Click on the layer (sometimes have to double click) to get the image to reappear in colour
7. Click on an adjustment layer ie curves and make your adjustments.
8. You will see that only a certain portion of the image is affected.Its better explained here : http://www.lightstalking.com/how-to-use-luminosity-masks-in-photoshop-to-transform-your-images” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
I am doing more research into this as apparently you can create your own custom luminosity masks in PS.

shutterbugParticipantThanks Mark, will have to give it a go, only just starting in PS so just trying bite size bits
of info!markst33ParticipantA lot of the good landscape photographers in out club are using LR nowadays rather than PS.
I found a more detailed tutorial on them here http://goodlight.us/writing/luminositymasks/luminositymasks-1.html” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; and there’s a bit of learning and experimentation in it.
So keep your eyes peeled for my attempts with these in the future :)

shutterbugParticipantI use Lightroom in preference to PS but would like to get some knowledge in PS
As I have just joined up to Creative Cloud, would like to get the value out of it,
9.99 a month for all the CC applications (much more than I will ever use) which
I didn’t think was bad value.miki gParticipantbigalguitarpickerParticipantgreg77ParticipantHi Mark, I don’t really like this edition, white balance is a problem, blue concrete does not looks good, however for first time is ok. I’m using luminosity masks from some time, this is very difficult method, but is worth to learn. Your picture could be edited in normal way, using layers and paint brush in Photoshop.
I can recommend Tony Kuyper panel but most important movies from Sean Bagshaw about luminosity masks it helps a lot.

Sean Bagshaw – http://www.outdoorexposurephoto.com/video-tutorials/video-tutorials” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false; there is nice deal – movies and Tony Kuypers panel
