    Hey all,

Im very new to photography and im looking to get a fish eye lens for skate & band photography. What would people recommend for this? im using a Canon EOS1000D.

Also, for skate photography what other equipment should i be using? its mostly street but some park shots

Not sure why you would want a fisheye for the kind of photography you suggest. Results are pretty whacky with a fisheye with lots of distortion.
If you just need the wide angle I would go for a Sigma 10-22.
I suppose if you are taking a shot of a band at a gig you could get most of the audience in as well with the fisheye.
Some of the best shots of skateboarders I have seen have been taken on a medium zoom (24-105mm)

I got the Canon 15mm fisheye recently and its an amazing piece of kit.
If overdone it can look a bit cliched but I think it would br great for the
type of photography you mentioned….I also have the Canon 10-22mm
wide angle and you just do’nt get the same effects…I got mine on e-bay
at an auction second-hand and it was perfect…they do cost a lot new
but have a look at e-bay and see what you can find…you will be amazed at
the results if you get one.

Hi Stephen. Personally, I’d feel that a fisheye lens would be a very disappointing piece of equipment to own, basically due to its limited use. After taking a few shots, which would be good for the novelty effect, the lens would be put away to gather dust.
A fisheye adapter could be a cheaper option though. I think that a good wide angle lens would be much more beneficial. It could be used on a wider variety of subjects and would hold its value better if you decided to sell it to get something else. You could also add a fisheye effect using software. I’m not sure if Photoshop can do it, but I know Paintshop does. Good luck with whatever you decide.

    Hi Stephen,

I’m afraid I would concur with the other replies.

I would put a fisheye lens in the same category as colour popping in PS.

Seems good fun but the novelty can wear off quickly.

I wouldn’t want to put you off getting one if you have your heart set on it but
you will more than likely get more use and thus value from a wide angle lens
    such as the Canon EF-S10-22.
I bought this lens second hand from a fellow PI member and it is very good.

Of course I’m not shooting skaters. :?

The best of luck whatever you decide.

I must check out the zenitar one, what about the fish eye adapter? is the effect the same or is it lesser quality???

Would be very wary of any sort of ‘adaptor’. Fisheye lenses are very complex, difficult to design and assemble lenses, hence part of the reason for their high price.

The zenitar might be worth checking out, and also believe there is a russian fisheye (peleng ?) which is quite reasonable too. If going this route, just ensure they can be mounted properly on your Canon without damaging it.

If you’re after a fisheye, I say go for it. The effects can be quite funky, and have seen the type of shots grabbed in skating and wedding photography with such fisheyes, and when done well can look fantastic. I’d imagine it will never be your main lens but so what – we can all only have one main lens, so does that make owning others worthless.. :)

I got a 10.5mm nikkor fisheye for Christmas (‘Dear Willem, Lots of love and have a great 2010, Love Willem’ :D ) and I’ve only messed about with it so far, but I love it. It’s a more valid purchase now as you can straighten the images out into wide-angle with software, which makes it more useful for ‘legitimate’ photography…
