Guide number? Doesn´t matter if you are an amateur or a pro, it depends how far is the object. For portraits you don´t need a strong flash, for sports you do.
What camera body do you have? If Sigma, go for Sigma, if Nikon, go for Nikon, if Canon, go for Canon, etc.
barrynParticipantits a canon 40 d the flash would be just for portrait or small group photos
thanks for the replybrendancullenParticipantHi Barry – It depends on your budget. I own the 430EX ii and am very happy with it. If you decide in the future to upgrade your camera to a newer Canon – this flash can handle the new in-built wireless remotes ( 550D, 60D, 7D, 5D etc).
It’s ETTL ii – so very straightforward to use in AV or S – but has powerful custom functions ( high Speed Synch, Second Curtain etc). Easy to adjust the power output down to 1/64th. 4 AA batteries so you get plenty of flashes. Quick re-charge time which is very important. Spend a little more and get quality. It will last years.
Canon also do a cheaper flash – the 270EX
Hope this helps.

paulParticipantThe 420EX is a good flash. It should be more than capable for what you want.
SeaviewParticipantI recently bought a Nissin Speedlite Di622 from 7dayshop, it’s a budget flash but I’m more than happy with it. It’s a great starting point for getting into flash photography, it’s also got some good reviews on the net.
Dave.
PeteBedellMemberIt would be a good idea to splash out for a 580ex as it can be used as a master to control a second or third flash off camera which is very useful.
Your 40D i Believe does not have a flash control built in to operate a remote flash by wireless.
If it’s pro work you are contemplating then bite the bullet and get the 580.
PetebarrynParticipantbarrynParticipantanybody use this flash as it has the same bits and bobs as canon 580 ex but £120 cheaper i know you get what you pay for
