Flash pop up not working

    hi there,

apologies if I have this in the wrong spot but scanned for the best place to put it!
I have a Canon 400D SLR, was using it at the weekend and notice that the flash pop up would not work on automatic mode even by pressing the button on the left hand side of the camera which normally activates it.
It will automatically activate when needed in other modes. :?: :!: :?: :!:

Any ideas what this could be?

    tks a mil

    Hi Firesign,

I had exactly the same problem two weeks ago with my 450D. Seems to happen often on some canon DSLR’s.
My 430EX II would also not work when attached to the hotshoe.

What has happened is that a little 5mm pin has become ‘lost’ that fits under the silver plate on the hotshoe.

Here are two links i successfully used to remedy the problem.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Firesign.
I think the reason the pop up won’t work in automatic mode is that there is probably sufficient light in the scene due to the camera deciding on the aperture & shutter speed, so therefore it doesn’t need the flash to get a proper exposure. In the other non-automatic modes, you are deciding on at least one element (shutter speed or aperture).

Thanks for those replies… I’ll try the links and let ye know if it works.

I’ve tried getting it to fire in low light conditions as well on auto mode and it seems to work okay. Just won’t let me override like normal.

Tks for the tips though, will give it a shot!

    Enjoy the sunny weekend :D

Hi Firesign. DO not now take the hotshoe plate off. Nothing wrong with your pop-up flash.

    Go with miki g’s advice.

    ciao

Flash pop-up hasn’t worked in four years in my Fuji S2 Pro – I’m delighted, removes one bad habit :-)
