Flickr = Sad?

nfl-fanParticipantCianMcLiamParticipant
I agree with the original sentiments, I heard someone saying that Barbara Streisand makes music for people that hate music, I think much of Flickr is photos for people who hate photography. Vast swathes of style and ego over substance. I’ve seen more than one or two people go from dire to ‘Diamond!!!!!’ overnight after downloading Photomatrix or a new plug-in for photoshop. It’s like the Cokin craze back in the old days, taste and subtlety squashed under the bloat of supposed ‘eye candy’. And the pretensiousness of it all… I looked up one gallery mentioned here, what a waste of some otherwise nice photographs.
For my own part, I’ve gone from ‘Easy-Eddie’ to grumpy old McCynic almost as fast as some people pick up groups.
ExpresbroParticipantAh ya shower of cynics yis…
Well..mainly John and Aidan..but what the hell…heheh!!
You gotta get it through your heads…Flickr is not really about critique..which is why i chat here and post here.
If I get some critique then fine…if I don’t…fine. To me it’s just somewhere where I can post my shots and if anyone asks me where they can see my stuff I point them to my flickr. If I ever set up a personal website then I most likely wont bother too much with Flickr.
I don’t do the whole hearts and flowers thing…well..I did it a few times, but it gets boring after a while and has no real merit anyway.
But if it floats your boat fine..if it doesn’t..don’t do it.
Flickr is HUGE. If you want to find all the sickly sweet stuff you will..if you want to avoid it…you can.
Sometimes I just love to jump from stream to stream..clicking on any pics that catch my attention.
I don’t waste time reading through 100’s of comments (or copy and paste them either…John..;-))
There are plenty of members on here who’s work I like, and who don’t have websites, so where else can I easily access their work?
This whole..Oh there’s no proper critique on Flickr thing is a red herring. For the most part there isn’t..though I have had some decent critiques on some of my shots..but as I said above…if you want critique…post on a forum like this.
If you want the hearts and flowers…join the groups…if you don’t..don’t join the groups.
Pretty simple really… :D :D

That same sentiment could apply to a lot of the vanity photographer websites out there too Ken.
There is a huge amount of pretentious muck on Flickr…but there are also a lot of really talented photographer too.
We’ve all seen the beautiful young women Flickr pages where they just post hundreds and hundreds of shots of themselves..usually with a bittersweet poem attached and gangs of admiring young..and not so young..beaus ready to proclaim their genius.
But that’s only part of it…and easily avoided once yer finished having a giggle at it…
nfl-fanParticipantHaving Flickr as a central location for hosting and sharing your images is not up for debate here.
Point being Robbie that I posted a comment on a picture that was asking a guy did he do anything different and he deleted the comment and banned me from future comments (If the original comment was still available I’d post it word for word so that you could see that it was worded rudely or anything to that effect). That lead me onto reviewing the whole comment/community feature on Flickr and then I thought it would be interesting to debate it.
I enjoy a debate and I enjoy a bit of craic too… and that’s what this thread has been so far. People expressing common and opposing views.
Rarely does anything meaningful come out of these sort of debates… but for me it’s just sharing experiences and socializing with people via debate. Whether we totally agree or disagree doesn’t really matter… we all still have to get up for work in the morning so this won’t change a thing.
I don’t do the whole hearts and flowers thing…well..I did it a few times
Ha ha… I wouldn’t admit to that… you have balls!!! You are the first recipient of the Official NFL-Fan Award for Bravery. Well done
ExpresbroParticipantThey don’t call me Big Cahunas for nothing Bro…
Actually..they don’t call me that even when I pay them…
Anyway..no point saying otherwise…there’s a couple of “Wonderful Image” and “You’ve been awarded a large lump of coal for your image” comments on my stream…but not half as many as some on here…hehehe!!!
ExpresbroParticipantOh btw..I meant to say…there are some really useful Flickr groups as well. One of the best groups I’ve come across is the Nikon D80 Group where there are a lot of really excellent tutorials and some nice people to offer advice on specifics relating to my camera.
The other thing I find useful as well is say with something like my recent query on the wide angle lenses. I can go to flickr and do a search for images taken with just that lens.
Another really useful part of Flickr :D
But I reiterate…if you want proper critique…come to PI…. :D :D
nfl-fanParticipantI take this all back…
This Flickr comment, just left this evening on one of my images, has completed me…
Wow! I love your pictures! They’re dreamy!
It makes me want to be a better photographer.
BMParticipantExpresbroParticipantAh that was just me John…
Just wanted to cheer you up on a Tuesday evening….hehehe!!
ExpresbroParticipantCome to think of it…
Do I have you as a contact on Flickr John?
And don’t worry…I have no desire to have your baby….
nfl-fanParticipantnfl-fanParticipantps. Robbie.. don’t think I’m on your contact list.. I don’t even know how to add a contact in Flickr.. I did install that PicLens recently though… pretty damn cool for browsing someones work.
ExpresbroParticipantWell what’s your Flickr addy then? will soon sort that..
and I’m adding her too…hehehe!!
ExpresbroParticipantI just put nfl-fan into the Flickr search tool and got this!!!
