Really nice Carl. Great colours and nice DOF. Looking forward to bringing the D80 to Majorca in the summer myself. How did you find the light? I imagine it would be quite harsh for a lot of the time?

    Lots of early mornings?

Love the first one Bird of Paradise, great colour in it, the second
looks a little soft and the third is nice also, I actually brought a little
bit of that third one home with me from holidays once and it is growing
in my garden, doesnt flower as much as it should but does in the height
    of summer.

Thanks Robbie, as it wasn’t the height of summer although sunny it was just better than at home, light wise it didn’t seem too bad. Good luck during the summer (not too many early mornings).
Shutterbug in total agreement with you wasn’t until it was posted that I noticed that the bud to the right of the flower in the second one was more in focus than the flower.
    thanks again

Some nice subjects. The first one needs a little breathing room at the top. It feels a little clipped. A slight recomp where there is slightly less space on the bottom would have done the trick. Nice focus and light though. The 2nd look to be out of focus to me. That kills it. The third … There’s something missing. Don’t know what, though. Admittedly, flower shooting isn’t something that I know much about.

    I agree with Aiden.

On the third, maybe rotate it 90′ and crop right & top to have just the flower itself.

    Hi Soda.

For me, the strongest potential here is in your third shot. The colours are
clear, sharp and vibrant, and the focus and dof is absolutely nailed. The only thing that
lets it down slightly is your composition/framing. Rather than rotate the image, I’d be
more inclined to crop to a more letterbox format, remove the top flower completely and
a small amount from the bottom of the frame.
The second image is too out of focus to rescue really, and in the first the dof is actually
too shallow for the subject you’re photographing – whatever type of flower this is, it should
really be in focus in its entirety for it to work properly.
This is of course just my opinion.

Thanks everyone for the c omments can’t really argue about any of them and I will look at the suggestions re cropping of the 3rd one. I had actually looked at removing the other flower in the 3rd but decided to go a head with my original.
I will look at the other ones I took at the time maybe find improvements (different) for each. Rob I know in 1 the tip (don’t know the flowers name either) is oof but I thought I got a way with. I suppose I will have to save and go back again for more(I wish)
    cheers

Rob a quick fix what do you think I don’t know if it adds that much to it.

    What do you think

Don’t crop quite so close to the flower on the bottom and you’ve
got a fine flower study there Soda. Definitely an improvement –
draws the viewer straight to the subject without any distraction.
