Football photography

Hi. I’m looking for as much advice as I can possibly get on photographing a football match. I might be photographing a match for a friend of mine and I need know everything about football photography ie. what equipment, techniques, shutter speed, ISO settings etc. Every piece of serious advice I will listen to. Thanks.

You don’t need L lenses.
If possible, sit behind the goal of the attacking team you want and get down low. Use AI Servo to focus with the 70-300 with as high a shutter speed as possible (>1/500) and you should be fine. Play around with the settings in Manual and you will find something that suits. There is no right or wrong settings that me or anyone else can give you as it will depend on the lighting conditions on the day.

Thanks mate. Would a 200mm lens be good enough for getting the shots?

For local football games, I use a 70-200mm lens, probably set at f/4. Bump the ISO, depending on the light, to get a shutter speed of 1/400 or faster.
Just back from my first game. Used the 1000D with the 70-300mm f/4-5.6. I had a lot of problems with the players being blurred but the background being pin sharp. What settings could I use to stop this problem?

Set the centre focus point only. You don’t want your camera using all focus points.
