I want to upgrade my stuff on a trip to the States soon, so I have the following for sale:

    – Canon 30D. ~7000 actuations, great shape, just a little wear to the hotshoe from the flash. With grip and remote as well as battery, charger, manuals and software.
    ?900

    – Canon 50mm f/1.8. Good condition, almost never used – I was advised to buy it when I got my 30D, because it was cheap, but I’ve since discovered I’m too lazy to use primes
    ?60

    – Canon 17-40mm f/4 L. Only 7 months old, good condition. My favourite walkaround lens. Includes hood and bag.
    ?600

    – Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L. Again less than a year old, good condition. Includes hood and bag.
    ?950

    Reasonable offers considered ; )

I always find it strange when someone’s first and only post is in the equipment for sale forum…..and I would also love to know how you intend to upgrade from the Canon 24-70 2.8L lens? Is there anything ‘better‘ at that range???? Your profile doesn’t tell us anything about you either?

My first and only post is here because I usually post on a different photography forum, which isn’t ideal for selling gear on as it’s international.

I intend to replace the 24-70 and the 17-40 with the 17-55, which for me, combines the best of both lenses: the wider focal range of the 17-40, and the speed and IS of the 24-70. Plus it’s got IS and great IQ, and it’s light, which is something I need in a walkaround lens, as I find that the 24-70 makes my neck sore. Does that justify my intentions adequately, or should I bow to your superior knowledge of my photography needs and keep the lenses you think I should have?

The reason I haven’t filled in my profile is that I wan’t sure if I’d be spending much time posting here. I like the forum I use now; the posters are friendly, I like the sense of humour there, and they have a wedding photography forum, which I spend a lot of time in, so I wasn’t sure that this one would compete. Frankly, after reading your post, brandyman, I don’t see why I’d bother making more effort, in the face of such suspicion and rudeness.

Forgive me for being suspicious. Is this not the internet? And don’t forgive me for having good intentions.

The fact that it’s the internet doesn’t mean you should be rude; fair enough, it might be safer to assume the worst about people, but is it really necessary to say it? It’s a bit off-putting to be spoken to like that when, let’s face it, there was absolutely nothing in the thread to suggest that I wasn’t perfectly genuine.

So basically you’re saying that only people with a high post count and detailed profile will be treated with courtesy and assumed to be honest, while everyone else will be treated as a probable troll or scammer? Maybe you should have a sticky explaining that.

I said nothing of the sort….that is your rather strange interpretation (which may change if you ever fall victim to onlone fraud). Can I suggest that you either fill in your profile, or post a link to your website, or such like. Note that this was a mere suggestion. And a friendly one at that.
I still dont know who you are.

Not to get into argument but I think Ross has a point here, if you could fill your details or at least give some kind of reference to yourself as a seller, that would help possible buyers to clear their head.

Now, where are you located? I have a 17-55 IS that I might trade against your 24-70mm f/2.8 L (for future FF upgrade ***dream) but I’d like to do it in person if you are up for trade.

    Thanks,
    Unal

Redser, I hate to be interupting like this, but Ross was right.
I was thinking exactly the same when I saw your post and couldn’t find any information about you.
There doesn’t have to be anything in a post that cries out: ‘I am trying to screw you over!’
It’s enough if you offer tons of gear and don’t say a word about yourself.
When we suspect something is dodgy in a forum like this, we say it!

I can understand that it might have put you off to be suspected like that.
But instead of introducing yourself to the 924 members of this forum or giving a link to your website/gallery you decided to complain about us wanting to know who you are.
I hope you’ll eventually tell us, we get a chance to look at your photos and you get a chance to sell your stuff.

Writing this doesn’t mean I am a bad, grumpy, suspicious person.

    BTW, welcome to PI

Not quite… You are selling the 30D to upgrade as well? You can only upgrade a 30D to a 5D, 1D or 1DS, none of which will take the 17-55 lens you intend to buy to replace the fantastic 17-40 or 24-70 L lenses. The 17-55 is an EFS lens, suitable only for use with a crop sensor camera, ie the 30D. But no doubt you know that. Which brings me back to my first question……

Ugh – here goes the long and convoluted explanation…

Yes, I intended to upgrade my gear; initially, the plan was to change my 3 current lenses (well, 2 now that the 50’s sold) for the 17-55 (and a Sigma 70-300, but let’s not confuse the story any more!).

When I realised the other day that 5Ds were so cheap in New York (where my family will be next week), I thought it was an ideal opportunity to upgrade, as I’ve been watching my dad shoot with a 5D for the last year or so, and there’s only so long you can do that for without thinking about how much better life would be if you had one. So I edited my original post to add the 30D.

I spent the weekend gradually coming to the conclusion that getting a US 5D would be pretty silly, because of the warranty and servicing problems, so I changed my mind about that, but haven’t edited my original post yet to reflect that.

And no, I actually didn’t realise the 17-55 was EF-S until a couple of hours ago; it wasn’t an issue when I was keeping the 30D, and the whole 5D thing was impulsive and badly thought out, I just got carried away.

So there you have it: I’m cr*p at deciding things, but fundamentally honest ; )

And incidentally, now I think I might go for the Tamron 17-50 instead of the Canon 17-55 (I refer you to my previous post about being crap at deciding things).

As for the not knowing anything about me, it’s a fair point, and probably any equipment trading forum would fairly similar. It wasn’t so much that I had a problem with Brandywine wanting more information, it was the way he phrased the post. The ‘I always find it strange…’ bit could have been a straightforward ‘please could you tell us more about yourself, and maybe give us a link to a website’, which would have been far less confrontational. The comments questioning my choice of lens were unnecessary and irrelevant. I’m afraid there’s generally not much chance that I’ll respond well to a post like that first thing on a Monday morning!

So, about back to the point of the thread:
    – the 50mm is sold.
    – the 24-70mm is sale agreed, I’m just waiting for the cheque.
    – the 17-40 is still available, and I can post pictures of it and taken with it if anyone is interested.
    – the 30D is no longer for sale.

    And about me:
    – I live in Louth but work in Dublin so if anyone’s interested in the 17-40 I can meet up more or less anywhere in Leinster.
    – I don’t have a website: I’m not a professional photographer and I only have a couple of shots I’d bother putting on the net!
    – I’m not good with Mondays
(oh, and I am a bad, grumpy and suspicious person  )

It seems to me that if you have already sold the 50mm to a PI user that should be a good
testimony of your honesty in itself.

I do agree with Ross that I have been suspicious of some peoples first posting being for sale items
but to be honest if you are suspicious then ignore it. Common sense will usually highlight the dodgy
    sellers anyway.

I am curious though, out of all the sales that have taken place here, has anyone ever been stung.
Is there an actual basis for all this suspicion.

Oh and good luck with the sale, sorry but have to watch the pennies at the moment.
( also apologies for the thread hijacking )
