Trying to get a badger and two of these showed up instead. I was using 3 speedlites set up on stands. Very difficult to get the focus right, I have loads of out of focus shots. At one point they were no more than 2 meters from me.

Well done John.. even just the setup and finding the place would be difficult enough…

    Fair play…

Extraordinary shots. The first is amazing. I’ve been told you need a
licence to photograph badgers, does the same apply to foxes?

I assume you had a licence if you were setting up lights on stands –
    what’s involved in getting one?

Absolutely fantastic. Lovely and sharp and the colour of the coat is nice. How dark was it and how did you manage to focus if you dont mind me asking?

No licence needed for foxes or other unprotected animals such as rabbits. Yes a licence is needed for Badgers and yes i do have one :) . You apply to NPWS for the licence. More details on http://www.npws.ie

Goosebanker: I used a headtorch and focused on the white rock manually, the other side of the rock had maple syrup on it :)

You need a license to photograph Badgers???????

Im from the country and I regularly see badgers when driving at night. Is it illegal for me to stop and photograph them if i dont have a license????

Brilliant use of speedlights here, the images speak for themselves.

Excellent images John, especially the first one. Colour and clarity is brilliant. Great use of the speedlights as Gareth already said.

I love to see photos of these guys..I think they are just beautiful creatures, despite the bad press they get. I’ve never seen one in the flesh myself, which is mad really. I know my parents-in-law have a fox that regularly visits their garden on the Navan Road but I’ve never been lucky enough to see him/her.

    Nice work John!

Great example of good camera skills mixed with nature / local knowledge, added to a gallon of patience, a dash of luck, and this is what can be maded :-)
