I was taking a close look at those eyes and noticed that there is a faint blue shadow on the lower lid of her right eye but not her left. Or is it that her left eye is slightly turned away?

I’m not really sure to be honest :?: One thing I can rule out is processing, because as I said there was no adjustments in colour or exposure on this one (some selective sharpening) and as hinted in another thread, no whitening of the eyes either.
PixelleMemberQuick edit “…slightly turned away. “
Sorry, Beth. No, I don’t mean her eye is slightly turned, I just mean it is at a different angle vis-a-vis the camera, I hope you know what I mean.elludeParticipantOh my… Beth’s eyes are amazing!
It’s a lovely shot. The dof is pretty good here, even at f1.8 (if you don’t crop the pic much) it can be tricky to get the both eyes and tip of someone’s nose in focus if close up.
Also like the use of fill-in flash. I’m a big fan of flash for the added sharpness it gives a picture and the way it kills shadows under the eyes etc. The catchlights in the eyes are a small price to pay (although sometimes it can reflect off the skin).
One thing I’ve been trying recently when doing fairly close-up outdoor pictures is point the flashgun about 45 degrees off to the side, so the main ‘pop’ misses the person completly. Usually enough (much softer) light will escape from the side to light the person’s face nicely. Naturally this will only work in manual mode if you’re using a dedicated flash :)
Good stuff!
RodcunhaParticipantThis is class Ciaran…
but…
didn’t you forget to reduce the saturation levels to 0? :P Just messing… great colours btw!
DarrenGParticipantI love this shot. This is the type of photography I want to get into a lot more and maybe one day end up with a shot as good as this.
ThorstenMemberCiaran – having looked at this again, a question! Have you thought about doing something with the highlight in the top left hand corner? The more Ilook at this shot, the more it’s becoming a distraction.
RobMemberGorgeous Ciaran. Not much to add to what’s already been said.
Nothing amiss with those catchlights at all in my opinion. Looks very natural.Rob.
ciaranParticipantCheers everyone :)

Thorsten, this has been printed and mounted on a white board so the blown out corner blends very well into the mount. I had considered cropping it differently, but in the end I’m very pleased with it. One of my better shots, even if I do say so myself :) It better win the next competition :!:
thomasMembereasParticipantsuper portrait indeed. It’s really great.
For a shot taken at 1.4 the DOF seems quite deep? At that range I can hardly get nose and eyes in together on a 1.8, but i do have trouble focusing properly sometimes (often).
In any case, well done.
