Hi all,
This is a link from the suggestions area regarding posting of scams and frauds re: photographic equipment and services.
The most recent one I have come across regards Canon L lens and a fake DHL email and website. The modus is as follows:
1) Ad will appear in the likes of Buy & Sell, Free Ad etc.
2) The ad will appear as if the seller knows something about the detail of the equipment e.g. “Canon 24-105mm f/4 L USM Lens”
3) The price will generally be what you would expect for the lens at a second hand price.
4) There will only be an email contact BUT the items location will be given as Dublin 1
5) If you contact by email you will be told that the item is still available and new!!!.
6) You will then find out that the item is actually in London.
7)You will then get this email. “If you can come here to pickup the product and make the payment it will be better for both sides. If not, we will find another way to do this deal. Kind regards!”
Of course you won’t be going to London. Then if you look for safe alternatives you will get the following email.
” I use a new service from DHL, something like Cash-On-Delivery, but only if the costumer is not in a hurry. If he is in a hurry i only use Money Gram or Western Union. If the deal is made throught DHL, Money Gram or Western Union, the shipping costs are payed by me.”
9) If you follow up for details on the DHL service you get “if you want information about the COD system from DHL contact them at dhl-supportdhlsite.com“
This takes you to a fake site and email.etc. etc.
DHL do not do COD services. This is a crude scam but I think it’s no harm to get it out there. I should say that I have used Ebay, Buy & Sell etc. for 2nd hand gear over the past few years and have found them excellent and reliable to date.

clawlessParticipantHi
I nearly got caught by this one, but sussed the ‘come to London thing’ was a give away. When i didn’t reply to their emails I got a few to see if I was still interested!!! Thank god I didn’t fall for it..Is there any ideas out there of how to scam this scumbag back….???
clawlessParticipantI found a canon 30d posted in Buy & sell.ie & I emailed for details &
This was the email I got back from
Authorized Seller”Hello,
The item is brand new, sealed in box, with 2 years international warranty and it was bought from England.
If you want to make the deal, you must know that i represent a small company from London. If you can you can come and pickup and make the payment from London.
If you can’t come here you must know that i work only with DHL and their new COD way. If you have questions of this details you can contact them at the following email address: dhl-supportdhlsite.com
Sorry again for the inconvenience and i am looking forward to make this deal posible.
Kind regards!Come on any ideas to get these crooks back!!!
EquinoxParticipantHi
Has anyone contacted DHL about this scam? I am sure they would be very interested in it, especially if enough people came forward.
I use to have contact with DHL, UPS and other shipping companies in my old job and I know they do take this sort of thing very serious.griangrafParticipantDHL have some info. about a broadly similar scam on their website re:electrical/electronic equipment. The email address for the 30D is the same as the lens scam (seller authorised etc.). Same scammer.

gerardkParticipantThat same guy is advertising in buy and sell for Canon L lenses and 5’d’s (possibly nikon gear too) – I cant believe they let him get away with that. Those ads have been coming and going for at least 3 months now. I got the email about ‘pickup in london’ when I responded to an ad for an L lens and got an answer back about a 5d by mistake.
From: Authorized Seller
Hello,
Yes, the camera is still for sale.
It’s brand new, sealed in box, with 2 years international warranty.
If you are really interested you must know that I represent a small
company from London. If you can come pickup and make the payment here in
London everything will be perfect. If not, we will find other ways to make
this transaction.
I’ve attached some photos with the lens too.
Kind regards!I told them I wasnt interested at that point. It was advertised as being from a person based in Leinster – no phone number just an email. Buy and sell are doing a very very poor job of filtering those adverts. I’d hate to think of someone saving for several months for a camera or lens and getting scammed like that. This guy must be making thousands from Irish people. I have used buy and sell successfully too – and there are bargains there but I would only use it if a meeting and examination of the gear is possible. Here are the pictures I was sent.
griangrafParticipantMaybe a sticky regarding this scammer might not be a bad idea. As you said this guy must be making a mint with this one
MJNot Pete the blokeParticipantThere is a real scam operating at my local supermarket car park – there are these beautiful girls in bikinis who offer to wash your car for ?3. They wash your car and then one of them gets into the front of your car and gives you a blow job. She then sends you down to another group of girls to pay the money, but they mug you, and steal your wallet and watch.
So be careful!
It happened to me 3 times yesterday…..boom boom!

This is a serious thread Ross. But that is very funny.
clawlessParticipantThanks for the warning Brandyman phew, thank god none of us will fall for that one now…

I couldn’t stop laughing Ross!!! Can you ask them when do they plan to move into my local supermarket the next time?
Although I understand the matter is serious. The best options I think are to contact both DHL and the medium where this add is being advertised (buy & sell, etc) and let them know what is happening. I never advertised anything in the buy and sell but I suspect they request some sort of ID be it credit card, addresses or something to that extent, it might be easier to get these guys than what we think. Also if anyone has been scammed or tried to as it appears I would sugest contacting the Police or Gardai.
griangrafParticipantI had also heard about this car wash scam, but it is actually a scam within a scam. The girls in the bikinis turned out to be………… Lady boys      .
In all seriousness though lets keep the alerts for scams/frauds going.

griangrafParticipantHi all,
Some dodgy loking ads in the Buy & Sell recently for a 5D, 30D & 400D (XTi) all “located” in Carlow with only email contacts.
MJ
PeteTheBlokeMemberI came across an ad for a Pentax K10D on Google.
I had been searching for it on the US version of Froogle and the URL was
http://www.google.com/base/a/1482792/D17520992202105352710
ostensibly a legitimate Google address.
The incredibly cheap camera was listed by SRS in England, yet the seller wanted Western Union payment. I sent the link to SRS who assured me it was nothing to do with them. They must have contacted Google to have it taken down.
You only need to catch one sucker a week at $500 a pop – that’s a year’s salary in Nigeria.
