There’s a scammer in Romania who’s been making a mint off of people all over Europe via Western Union. It appears like he started on Amazon Shops. He then made his way to EBay. The sotry was that he’d made a big purcahse of US gear and was offering it to Europeans at US prices. People would contact him and then he’d send mails with fake “from” addresses appearing as if from EBay or Amazon, etc, to confirm purcahses. Tip off here would be bad grammar and speelling. Money would be sent by the buyer via western union and then the camera would never be received. But of couse, it was sent *wink*.

The big rule to live by: if it’s too good to be true… then it is too good to be true.

Do a google for romania camera western union and you’ll see loads of examples of this guy or his gang in action.

Then there’s the New York switch and bait scams. There’s numerous operators in New York who offer to sell gear for bargain prices. You make a purchase and then you get a phone call asking if you’d like to buy the battery, charge, manual, strap, etc that would nomrally be packaged. If you do, then the prise goes way beyond the normal shelf price. If you refuse to go through with the purchase they start threatening you. I’ve read that they even track you workplace down and make phone calls to bosses, etc. redit card companies will prevent the purcahse going through if you call them and explain the situation. Switch/bait is a con.

That’s why the only company I could recommend in NY is B&H … but only if you visit because you’ll get hit with VAT if they ship to here, which will then bring the price up to Belfast/UK levels.

A very ‘cheap’ 5D for sale in buy & sell from Kildare with e-mail details only could be a scammer
