How can two teams face a play-off, and their grouping for the finals be completely different, depending on who wins?
It’s called ‘Seeding’… it’s not unfair, it’s a perk for teams to play well, win games, move up the rankings and then get well placed for tournament groups.

If Ireland had gone through, they would have drawn with or beaten two of the last three world champions in this qualifying campaign, yet still entered the draw as third seeds.
I think it is unfair, if you can compete on level terms with world champions, yet be pushed down the seedings even if successful. It’s heavily biased towards the heavyweights.
It’s very difficult for any of the smaller nations to keep up a constant level of high performance to keep competing with the big guns.nfl-fanParticipantif you can compete on level terms with world champions
Well… when you draw 0-0 at home to Montenegro as Ireland did in October it puts things in perspective.
Ireland’s results have been mixed over the years with a few shockers along the way.
Looking at the rankings there are teams in positions above them that are debatable but there are very few teams above Ireland that you could say… “Yeah, if we played them 5 times we’d beat them at least 4 times”.
There’s a fairly good reasoning behind why Spain are ranked first and Papua New Guinea last.
Liam2673ParticipantWe were also beaten 5-2 by Cyprus and scrambled a last minute draw with the might Lichtensteiners…seeding is over the past two or three campaigns.
Also, note that the France game was the first time we beat a team with a higher FIFA ranking than us since 2002 (Holland) in a competitive game, or so the stato’s say.
The system helps the stronger teams, no question. So the trick then is to become a stronger team (i.e. win more games over a three year period), get ranked higher in the process, and then the ranking system makes it easier for us to qualify in the future. Where we went wrong (apart from a lot of other things) was letting the Swiss qualify ahead of us in the Euro’04 qualifiers, thereby moving ROI from Pool 2 to Pool 3. We’ve been stuck there since.
justaguyParticipantFact is that ireland is just a small nation. So there isn’t that much footballers around. and ofcourse the GAA is a very strong competitor to football. Lots of young boys end up playing gaelic or hurling.
This way Ireland will never going up the ranks. We just don’t have the players for it.For instance Holland is a small nation too, but football is the number one sport, so they do reasonbly well (not on club level)
Its just a pity that gaelic and hurling aren’t olympic sports
Mind you Ireland should have qualified this time though even with the handball. Keano was right. France was there for the taking
5faytheParticipantHi All,
If I’m not mistaken our soccer team reached #6 in the FIFA
rankings in 1993.
If we could have remained at a high ranking and been a 1st
tier ranked team for the qualifying groups our chances of
qualifying would have been greatly improved .That said we drew twice with the 1st ranked team in the just
finished qualifying competition.
I felt with a bit more ambition we could have picked up more
points against the so called lower ranked teams. There probably has to be some sort of seeding method.
Otherwise we might have Italy, Spain, Holland, Portugal and
Ireland in the one qualifying group.
Currently they do it on results in FIFA recognised matches
over the last 4 years. It’s interesting to look at some of the teams that are ranked
above us at the moment.Football at this level is a business and making money is the
name of the game.
Administrators prefer it when the likes of Brazil, Argentina, France
etc are involved in the big tournaments.
It’s the same in the Premier League where the viewing figures or
attendances for matches involving the big name clubs like Man U,
Liverpool and the likes are far bigger than those of the so called
lesser clubs.Like everybody else I don’t like it when my country fails to qualify
for major competitions but I understand why rules might be made
or bent to suit the bigger name teams.I also wonder what chaos would ensue if it became the norm for matches to
be declared void every time the referee was shown to have made an error.I do think soccer should follow all the other major sports that use technology
to lessen the chances of a mistake being made.Alan Corcoran on South East Radio had Senator Lisa McDonald on his programme
today advocating that the FAI and the players shoud sue FIFA for loss of earnings
and other inconveniences.
Shes a solicitor as well.Over on another station there were people who had lost their homes and businesses
in the floods. It’s good to talk.
Cheers.
John.
