Hard to get a shot of a Gannet that hasn’t been done before – well impossible perhaps.
These are some of my efforts from Saturday July 14th on the Saltees ( Yes the Puffins were gone)
Canon 7D, Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM & 580EXII
For this one – I used AF AI Servo (I rarely do with fast moving birds) – but as they are so big and just about to land AF focus worked perfectly fine. His wingspan is approx 2 metres.
I metered first for the sky in AV mode choosing a sweet mid-aperture of f/7.1, 1/3200, ISO400 ( I probably should have went 1/1600 and ISO200 to cut down some noise) then went manual using same settings – then added manual flash at full power to expose the bird correctly.
If the bird over exposed – i used a narrower aperture to control the flash.
Becasue of the recycling time you have to get it first time – or wait for another. Thankfully around 4-5 land per minute.I used a home made DIY “Better Beamer” made from a plastic fresnel lens from eBay , corriboard from a local printer and masking tape from Tesco to throw the flash out a further distance than normal. Total cost €5

CanonisedParticipantSuperb shots, no. 3 is my favourite.
You certainly have caught some remarkable shots here!
Eugenejodal1975ParticipantsndipoMemberGreat captures!! Cannot really choose a favourite but if I’d must, probably the first one as it forms the most interesting shape. Just brilliant shots!!
MikkaParticipantA great series Brendan, couldn’t fault them in any way. A big thanks for the info regarding how you managed to get the lighting just perfect…../Mikka
RitaMemberbrendancullenParticipantThks for kind comments.
jodal1975 – I was around 10 feet away.
The Auks (Puffins, Razorbills and Guillemots) have all fledged.
Gannets will be there until end of August.
Kittiwakes around another 2 weeks i’d guess. Fulmars the same maybe.I’m off to Rathlin Island in the morning for 2 nights and 3 full days. Hopefully some shots to share Monday.
