Fuji FinePix S9500 – Digital SLR type.

I bought this camera as a step up from my Canon PowerShot A70 camera… A big enough step as that just didnt give me the quality and functionality I wanted.

Starting with size/shape/comfort, it’s nicely modeled. The 4 AA batteries sit in a compartment which is held by your right hand and the weight is balanced out by the lense being on the left. There is a nice finish on the grip of the camera which will eliminate any slipping or moving in sweaty hands. There is just a nice chunky feel to it which lets you know just how the camera is sitting in your hands and where the lense is pointing. My favourite part of the the model is the LCD screen which flips up 90 degrees so that you can look down directly at the screen if it is on a low tripod or held low in your hands. It also then flips down, so if it’s held high above your head you can still see the target.

It has a 9 million effective pixel Super CCD and Real Photo Processor combination which gives great detail if used correctly. As this camera is an “SLR type” and not actually SLR, you can’t remove and change the lense. I don’t mind too much (except I can’t use a wide angle lense etc) as the lense covers a great length – also, not being an SLR you can take movies with it… which I like doing. The zoom 10.7 optical zoom has a manual zoom barrell and also a focus ring which is great when you want to get nice manual photos without using autofocus etc etc…

I’ve got some good quality photos on it so far (a post of two images I took with it) and I’m sure I can get better… I never really like the menus on the Fuji cameras (prefer the Canon’s) but once you get used to it you can find your way around handy enough and quickly and easily change functions/settings. There is the “auto” setting which is great for beginners who want a quick shot without messing around, and there is although the Manual setting for advanced users who want to tweak those shutter and apreture options etc…

The camera has slots for an XD Card, a CompactFlash card and a Microdrive card, so you wont be short of storage space!!

Below is the total specs of the camera (sorry for the layout… it was originally in a table)

All in all a great camera with a good price. I think my next step up will be to an actual SLR camera… but I’m gonna have fun with this first!!
