Full Frame, 18MP Nikon D3x in August?

Looks like Canon has a fight on its hands if this rumour http://www.electronista.com/articles/07/06/08/nikon.d3.rumor/ is true.

Now that just doesn’t look real to me-
It doesn’t look like a proper designer has been near that-

    Even the Bronica looks better-

It looks kinda stretched and the logo looks off-

I dunno, could be (probably am) wrong-

I know what you mean. I think it’s someone elses rendition of what they think it could look like.

There’s another discussion about on DP Review about the upcoming Nikon release as well: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=23532980

A FF Nikon would be so good for the camera world in general. It would give some Nikon shooters what they have been screaming for for a long time now and it would help reduce the price of the competition.

However, I will believe it when I see it announced by Nikon!

Here is an extract from that article:

“”A concept rendering of a future D3 is shown below. “”

So thats a concept camera and it looks like a concept too.

Brilliant rendering…!   I just love the power buttons that look like light switches…! I actually hope they do bring out a full frame machine as competition is only good…!

I doubt we’ll see a full-frame from Nikon anytime soon. Rumours are rife that they will release something with a 1.1x crop sensor but not full-frame. I suspect that by now Nikon must be coming under some pressure to produce something to head off Canon’s recent and near future releases if they aren’t to continue losing market share to Canon at the top end.

I thought the reason Nikon had shyed away from the full frame, was to do with the lens, the throat of the lens would need to be changed to be able to work with a full frame sensor. or is this not correct

That was my understanding too. One might ask why would this be an issue, as the mount worked fine with film cameras. Film doesn’t care which angle the light comes from but a digital sensor needs to have the light hitting it as near as perpendicular as possible and with a smaller diameter lens throat the angle of incidence on the edges of a full frame sensor would just be too acute. A wider lens mount gets around this problem by moving the edge of the mount closer to the edge of the sensor. Plenty of people thought Canon were mad when they changed their lens mount from the smaller FD to the much larger EF mount 20 years ago, but it was a brave and innovative decision that has paid dividends for them.

There’s an interesting (and somewhat technical) discussion on whether or not Nikon should change their mount over on the Nikonians forum

That pic is so old it’s due an upgrade itself now!

Things are really hotting up on the rumour mill now, seems like there will be a definite announcement before the end of June. I’m sure people bound by NDA’s are trying accupuncture and transcendental meditation to keep from exploding the news :)

Having previously worked for Nikon UK, they wont confirm anything until it is 150% confirmed from Tokyo, which means it will be very suddenly announced without a buildup, unlike Canon who like to push release dates back further and further. The D80 came last August so wait until then

I don’t think it’ll be a FF sensor. Nikon use the Sony sensors and as we know Sony has its Anti-Shake technology built into the camera body, so to have FF camera with anti-shake the coverage of the lens would need to be a wider than 35mm to allow for the movement of the sensor, otherwise images will have dark edges where the sensor has moved outisde of the 35mm image size. Rumours I’ve heard is Sony are about to release two cameras one a 1.1crop pro camera and a camera between the A100 and the new 1.1 pro. Rumour has it the press release is Monday July 9th. So I’m sure Nikon will follow suit.
