Full Frame, 18MP Nikon D3x in August?

That would certainly be in line with earlier rumours that I’ve come across that Nikon will release a 1.1x crop camera (see above). What I’m really interested in is seeing what effect this is going to have on the competition and on prices. It’s highly likely that Canon are going to release something new in the Autumn too. Whether that’s going to be a replacement for the 5D, 30D or even the 1DsMkII remains the subject of much speculation at this stage.

If Nkon do a 1.1 pro camera do they need to do new lenses???

snt that gonna really upset some people now???

One of the best things Canon did was to change from the FD to the EF mount. They pissed a lot of people off at the time, but it was short term pain for long term gain. I think Nikon could do the same thing, but they would need to go the whole hog, IMHO – no point in having a half way house where they end up having two of every lens simply to accommodate two mount sizes.

Overall, most Nikon lenses will work with a full frame camera (or they wouldn’t have a market to produce the extraordinary F6 film camera for), there’s fairly few ‘pro’ lenses that are purely designed for cropped sensors (eg. 17-55 and 12-24) and these have an equivalent ‘full frame’ model, the 28-70 and 17-35, that are still available.

What’s likely to happen if it’s a full/near 35mm frame would be a crop mode like the current D2X that would allow crop sensor lenses to work without modification and annoying vignettes.

Typically a lens designed for a full frame film body will, in most cases, not give as good an image quality on a full frame digital body. With film it matters not if the light incident on the film is perpendicular to the film surface or comes in at an angle. With a digital sensor however, this is an entirely different matter. The less acute the angle, the better the image quality will be. One way of addressing that issue is by creating a larger lens diameter.

    Ok Thorsten,
I’ll have to stop you there-

    1. I’ve got 4 lenses that’ll work on full frame Nikon, out of 5 total-
They all seem to work fine on digital, but were designed for film.
2 are primes- and optically they’re the best-
even though one is pre autofocus era-

    2. I’ve seen a website that compares lenses, (sorry, lost the link)
    From Canon, Nikon,
all on a 1DS Mk11, using adapter mounts,
and in one particular lens test, in the 17-35mm section,
I would definitely have the Nikkor- (on the basis of 100% comparison crops)

The Zuiko 24mm shift would appear to be the best in its class too- (check out ebay-)
with less distortion than the current Canon equivalent-
and from a lens thats over twenty years old.

There may have been a slightly golden era for lens design, around that time,
just before the health and safety era kicked in-
there are pieces of glass out there that may never be made again-
    (right Rob?)

The Canon throat design has one great advantage over any other-
it allows the use of almost any lens using an adapter-
and while there are obvious advantages in using Canon lenses on Canon bodies,
there are quite a few lenses I’d like to see through again, full frame, on Digital.

If Nikon bring out a bigger sensor,
then I presume they’ll keep the F mount-
which they’ve been very proud of for a long time now.

So I’d be surprised if I wasn’t able to use my existing full frame Nikon lenses.

Whatever the next generation of body is, from whoever,

    ?

This rumor that nikon will be changing the f-mount to accommodate a full frame sensor is out of control …why would they? Kodak use the f-mount and have had a full frame digital slr for 4-5 years. Maybe I’m missing something?
