Image taken last night of the Moon with Canon 400d and TEC140 (Aperture=140mm, Focal Length=980mm)
Constructive comments on improving the image are of course appreciated.
sean1098MemberThats mad looking, have never seen the moon like that before.
Sean.
jb7ParticipantirishshaguaParticipantdamn I need to get a better kit for myself, This was the best I got from Wednesday night.
astroshotParticipantThat’s not so bad. Slightly out of focus unfortunately. FOcus can be difficult.
I took about a dozen images and tweaked the focus ever so slightly each time – then picked the sharpest one.irishshaguaParticipantyeah I only have a cheapo stand from maplins and it was pretty cold. Would love to get a proper set up to get a few good pictures.
RobMemberastroshotParticipantGfoxParticipantThats really cool.. Its so detailed I thought for a minute it was an elaborate hoax!
ossie13ParticipantpaulParticipantBrilliant moon photo. You seem to know what you’re doing.
Here’s one I took tonight. Taken with 40D, 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS L (at 400mm)
CoveyParticipantstcstcMembercould you explain your tech settings, the apreture in particular i am interested in
PeteTheBlokeMemberIf focal length is 980mm and aperture 140mm, then that gives f/7. Isn’t that the way it works?
astroshotParticipantThanks all for your very kind comments re the image.
The TEC140 is an apochromat refractor (usually referred to simply as an “APO”) but in this case with exceptionally good colour correction and field flatness. I have it permanently mounted in an observatory (nothing more than a modified garden shed really which simply allows the roof to roll away and reveal the heavens, when it’s clear of course) in the back garden.
Here’s a link to more info on the scope: http://www.telescopengineering.com/
The diameter of the objective lens is 140mm and the telescope has an f/ratio of f/7, thereby a focal length of 980mm.
As I understand, camera lenses are usually expressed in terms of f/ratio and focal length, whereas in astronomy telescopes are usually expressed in terms of diameter of objective and f/ratio; in this case a 140mm f/7. You’d probably refer to a similar camera lens as a 980mm f/7.
For this image, I used a Canon 400d, 1/500 sec exposure at ISO100 in RAW mode.
Image was converted to 16bit TIFF and processed with Photoshop CS2.
