Fungi….

A difficult subject to shoot well but it looks like you had the weather on your side! Sounds daft, I know, but flat overcast light is just what you need for this type of subject – you can always inject a little modelling with flash if you need to but had you been working on a sunny day you would have a much tougher job of getting a half decent image.
On this occassion, the only image that works for me is the second one. The other two just seem a little cluttered to me, in spite of the shallow depth of field. My one gripe on the second one is that you didn’t include all of the right hand mushroom (is it a mushroom or is it called something else?)
But well done for going out when others (myself included) kept their cameras warm and dry!
carlParticipantThanks Thorsten, Its interesting that you picked the second shot as thats the one that a local well known photographer picked when I entered them in a club competition. In the begining the second shot was my least favorite as it was probably the easiest to take  . Just shows you, but I am liking it more now  . Thanks for the input, much appreciated!

I guess the lesson there is that sometime we seem to go out of our way to make life difficult for ourselves in the belief that it will make for a better shot, when all along the the simple beauty of a subject has been staring us in the face, there for the taking and we’ve missed it – so don’t beat yourself up simply because it was “easy to take”!
KPMParticipantVery disappointed when I saw these shots – wheres the lovable dolphin !!
Number 2 does it for me here, I thinks its the simplicity of the shot, which is very well exposed etc. The other two, for me, have too many distractions.
I echo Thorsten comments – very often its the simple things, done simply, which have the most power.

Thanks Kevin, I guess in shot 1 and 3 I was going for limited depth of field and I suppose my depth of field was not limited enough. I suppose I could photoshop them with some gausian blur but wouldnt that be cheating :P
RobMemberDefinitely shot number two! Simplicity itself and uncluttered, good exposure and depth. As Thorsten said though, a pity to have cropped off that mushroom on the right
Noely FParticipantI favour number 2 aswell,I dont think using PS to blur is cheating, if ya use it to adjust levels, saturation and sharpness, why not use it to blur? :)
RobertoMembercarlParticipantAliParticipantHmmm, if i was to buy one to hang on a wall it would have to be no. 1. Yep technically no. 2 is better but technically correct shots of fungus don’t really float my boat – that local well known photographer played it safe ;).
