G2 (Upgrade)

Since 2002 I’ve been relying on my trusty old G2 to take snap’n’grab images but with the battery wearing thin and the specific technolgy already outdated I imagined it might be a good time for a upgrade. Although the camera still takes brilliant pictures things like grain/noise makes the image hard to work with and if I want to improve things will have to move on. Apart from that I guess you can’t take a dog to a horse race and expect it to end up somewhere at the front (aint gonna happen)…

So with that in mind I’ve been thinking of and would appreciate feedback…

I have a budget of about Eur1400 which is enough to start out with. I’ve also been looking around and reading the last couple of weeks and it seems to me that the money might be to buy a new 50D including a lens kit. I also looked at the 40D but with the price nearly as much some places even more expensive as the newer 50D it wouldn’t make sense for me to pay the same amount of money.

The idea is not to take a narrow minded approach and do you guys think I should look beyond Canon or at another model?

    Thx in advance…

Hi Jetpack. I don’t know anything about the G2 to compare with other cameras, but I use a 50D and it is an excellent camera and would highly recommend it. But there may be better cameras in the same or lower price range from other manufacturers. I think a lot has to do with what type of photographs you want to take when choosing a camera.

In photography terms the G2 was a point and shoot :lol:

I’ve read, listened and looked at about every review of the 50D, 500D, 40D and one or two Nikons but because I don’t know Nikon it is difficult to warm to it.

When I bought my golf clubs a few years ago the salesman said “Why do you want to buy the best because it won’t make you play any better. Your game first need to improve…” I told him, well I’d rather be prepared for the moment my game does turn and at least in the meantime I have the opportunity to get to know my clubs and can’t blame the equipment for the failure. The idea is for the camera to become a companion just like the golf clubs.

With a course coming up one of these days I’d like to be prepared or to be able to take pictures of about anything but nothing in specific (love nature, scenery, landscape).

The 50D with 18-200 kit is what I have in mind… Not perfect but the best of both world it seems?

Well in that case, Yeah the 50D would be great. It is very user friendly. I took to it straight away and the only problem I have with it is the on/off switch is very small. I prefer the on/off switch on the 450D.

Unless you specifically want to head down the DSLR route you could look at the canon g11 which
has just been released. It’s well within your budget, which could free up money for software, or
    more golf clubs.
It will allow you to capture RAW files etc. All in all, a good package.

    Hope this helps.
