Garden Gourmet – Food

  • Here are a few shots I took today at the Garden Gourmet event held in Botanic Gardens, Belfast. It was my first time going but the weather was glorious and I really enjoyed it. Lots of free food to sample is a good way to put a smile on anybodies face as well! These photos were taken with the EF50 F1.8 as it was easy to handle at the busy stalls and the wide aperture came in handy inside the marquees were the light was fairly low. Any C&C would be very welcome and I will post some of the flower photos from the same event in the appropriate section. Thanks for looking!

    I like #2 and #4 here.
Number #1 if the focus was a bit back and the rosette writing was clear it would be better.
    #3 I dunno, just doesn’t appeal.

#2 is great, paella I presume, I had a lovely one recently, I think its time for another…

    Hi there!

You have some wonderful colors and textures in the first photo.
The rosette is a problem for me in that it is just sort of incongruous. It’s a very nice autumn display otherwise, but of course I understand that you couldn’t exactly ask them to move their award. Well you could, but I really don’t recommend that sort of cheekiness. It’s better to just look for another angle, unless of course, you decided to make the rosette central to the theme, and then as Martin mentioned, it would preferable to make sure the writing clearly focused with a more shallow depth of field.

I also like the second photo. That is one gorgeous pan of paella. Very pleasing to the eye!

Thanks for taking the time to comment, appreciated. I’d agree with the focus in the first one, I had actually intended to get the writing on the rosette as the focus point but I obviously misjudged it. I was using F1.8 or so on my 50mm and manual focus a lot but I realised when I got home and checked the results that such a wide aperture can be quite unforgiving if you get the focus point wrong. Very much enjoyed taking photos at it though as I have to say food & flowers wouldn’t be my normal subjects of choice. I was just blown away by the range of colours on show, a feast for both the eyes and stomach! Unfortunately I never got to try that paella as I had tasted so many samples at different stalls I thought I would explode if I ate any more… it did look delicious though! :)

Yuck that paella stuff looks rough…but I guess I’m on my own in thinking that and in liking the third shot :)
I’d crop a bit from the top for a sqaure composition maybe.
Also like the first but as the lads said shame about the writing.
