Can somebody tell me of any brokers etc that will insure my gear. I tried to put it on my house insurance with BOI but they said NO.

    Thanks
    Sean.

God forbid… but if the gear got nicked from your home then I’d assume that they would be covered by ‘home contents’ assuming that your home insurance includes this.

As for the bangs, drops and knocks then I’d assume you would want some additional cover. You often see leaflets in some of the magazines for crowds that specialize in this stuff. Thing is.. are they trustworthy and reliable?

As my father says “With insurance you’re covered for everything… until something happens… then the fine print kicks in”

if you earn any money from your kit then your house insurance wont cover it

I have a separate policy from Europlan insurances – on stephens green. if has 12K of kit plus publicy liability and employers liability, i think it cost me around 400 a year

it covers the kit worldwide etc, including in the hold of the plane

Not always. If an item has a value greater than ?1,200 then it needs to be specified on your policy. It really depends on your insurance cover. It is always better to check than finding out after the fact.

    Good point.

That’s why I mentioned always reading the small print… the insurance companies will gladly take your money and insure your contents and then when something happens it is only then that they tell you about all the terms and conditions.

I mean you are supposed to read the documentation first but people rarely do and the insurance companies seem happy enough for this to be the case. They rarely stress things like the ?1200 threshold.

Sure how many people insure their homes for what they think it market value is… not knowing that they would never actually re-coup that amount if the house were burnt to the ground, instead only being refunded the rebuild cost. Insurance companies say nothing and gladly take the premiums. Imagine if every insurance premum in Ireland was revised so that each house was properly insured based on rebuild cost… millions would be refunded to customers.

Got it sorted.have my gear insured for 7000 on the home insurance, but as mentioned had to give details and write them a letter to say I dont make any money from it.

    Thanks

    Sean.

Glad to hear it Sean. I have my gear insured through O’Brien Finlay (who are brokers for various agencies). I’ve found them to be very helpful, although I’ve not yet had to make a claim.

As I make my living from the gear, home insurance doesn’t cut it for me.

    Cheers,

Peter, I’m with the same people. The IPPA use them. Its wise to make sure that a home policy covers your equipment as there can be so many variables there like the value of each item, the type of item – is it ameteur or professional, is it always in the home or is it taken out of the home on occasion – then it may not qualify as part of home insurance and if it does is it covered when out of the home. Certainly if you make money from its use – even once ! – then its up the creek.
There can be so many grey areas.

Insured my gear for ‘all risks’ on house insurance, but had to give them a detailed list of the gear. I upgraded cameras recently and had to do the same with new camera.
Haven’t had reason to claim yet and hope not to, but the broker told me once I have it under ‘all risks’ I’m covered.

My gear is covered by the unspecified all risks part of the home insurance which covers it when I have it out of the house. I once asked what would happen if it was all taken in one lot and the told me it would be covered as no one item exceeded the excess.

This post has got me thinking, must get them to confirm it in writing.

    Hey Guys,

I have come across an insurance broker called “PJT Insurance”. They’re in Swords and their phone number is 01 8401254. I’ve dealt with a very nice lady called Lorraine over there.

Got all risks worldwide insurance for EUR 4500 worth of gear for around 200EUR. The insurance cover is on new-for-old basis.

    Best Regards,
    mike

Sean, beware of the “earn any money” bit. I’ve heard of cases where an insurance company refused to pay up because somebody had gotten some trivial amount for being published a readers gallery in a magazine – they classed it as earning. Remember – insurance companies like your money, and they really like to hold onto it as well

Followed up with insurerer to find since we changed policy cover was inadequate.

On their advice I am now specifying all the gear. This will cost €77 for €4.5K with no additional charge for the remainder of this year.

Also asked if it was still covered if a casual sale occurred. This is not a problem with use still viewed as amateur/hobby.
