The nearer the flash is to the lens, the more chance you have of having red eye. If its a compact with the little flash beside the lens then its difficult to avoid. Its because the light from the flash lights the blood vessels at the back of the eye.

One good thing about it…..if both eyes are red then they are most likely to be healthy. A case in the USA a few years back found only one eye on a particular child was red and it was found that the blood was not flowing properly to the other eye !
The discovery saved the childs eye and his life as it happened……it was the beginning of cancer that was the cause.

A bit of useless info…….but its the flash being so close to the lens

if you have photoshop you can remove the red eye pretty easily. if you don’t have photoshop and don’t want to purchase it (or psp), take a look at gimp, its a free photo editing program.
next time you could try turning your flash mode to red-eye reducer.

    Welcome back Smitty.

The Red Eye reduction tool is on the tool palette and is on the drop down menu with the Healing brush. The easiest way to bring it up is with a keyboard shortcut. Crtl-J will select it. Then it’s just a matter of placing the cross somewhere in the vicinity of the red part of the eye and click. Like magic, your red eye disappears.

    Hope this helps.

I think Gerry is right. But there’s an easy free solution. Download Picasa. It’s a free photo editing package from Google and has an easy to use Red Eye tool, plus lots of other nifty little features.

You can get it at http://picasa.google.com/.
