Getting off the ground

Hi I’m an amateur photographer, actually only a student at the mo studying design though I seem to have fallen for photography and apparently I’m not half bad at it (or so they say). I’ve got a long summer ahead and I want to make use of my photography to earn me a bit of money and give me something to do that I’ll enjoy. There’s no jobs as I can find at the moment in the business (especially not in my area, although I don’t mind traveling), so I have become quite taken by the idea of starting my own business and I can get a lot of help if I do.

But that’s all I’ve got right now . . . I have some skills, decent equipment (though I could definitely do with more in time) and an idea of what I wanna do but I don’t know what step to take to get myself started. Can anyone help me, advise me of how I can start-up something? How I can get going?

This is really the problem with photography today. Here is a person that admits that they know very little but the profession is so easy to just put out a shingle. LEARN. Have respect for the profession. Then start a business.

I’m sorry but your comment confused me a bit . . . are you saying I need to have respect for the business or other people do? If you’r saying I do I can tell you I have a great respect for it so there is no room for such a comment. All I want is a bit of advise as to where to start because there’s many ways to go with photography and a lot to it but I believe it’s definitely worth doing if you’r able for it.

You are saying that you want to start your own photography business while you admit that you don’t know very much about photography. How is that respecting the business. That’s like me saying I want to start a home building business this summer because I can’t find a job but I don’t know anything about building homes. Ridiculous.

Sounds like me 25+ years ago … and I still ask those very same questions today :)

The No.1 question is: Who’s going to buy it ?

Actually I was saying that I know very little about how to get a business off the ground, I’m sorry if you misinterpreted me but I actually know quite a bit about photography now and I’ve invested a lot of time and energy in learning as much as I can because it’s a real passion of mine. Why would I be so interested in starting a business in this field if I didn’t know much about photography? In my opinion you need to have a passion for something if it’s going to work out and it would be hard to know if I had that if I hadn’t been learning and gathering experience in the actual photography itself because as you said it would be ridiculous.

Thank you very much Ashley that’s very helpful I’ll start investigating the market see where I can find an area with a need for images.

I’m sorry if I seem a little ignorant about this but how would I get my images seen even if I find a market needing them?

    That’s always the biggest problem.

What sort of photos do you want to market? Landscape, wildlife, sport, photojournalism, wedding, portrait, etc????? You need to pick your market, research that market, and see how others do business in that market.

Getting your images seen is always the hardest part.

Bex I agree with Paul above when he says ” Getting your images seen is always the hardest part” so many good photographers taken good photos that never see the light of day except on forums like this one

Bex, start loading images here so that the PI members can offer CC and this will improve your shots

    Goodluck.
