Getting published?

IrisParticipant
I am very interested in getting my photos published in the newspapers, local and national, and i am looking for some tips and hints. i need to know what kind of program i need on my PC to edit photos and what size i should be sending them in at to the paper. i have been sending some pictures in, but i am not sure if they are going in at the right size, or are the files too big. i have an 8mill pix camera. i would be grateful for some help.
paulParticipantAny time I’ve worked on assignment for a paper, they will specify the image size/quality. It really does vary. What you want is 300 dpi, and a small file (usually under 1mb). But, again, it can vary from paper to paper, and it will depend on the size of the final print required.
IrisParticipantThanks for that Paul :D , i was talking to a guy in the Irish times over the phone, and he e.mailed me a picture they were publishing that day, just to give me an idea of size and quality, the file size was (470.8 KB). so what is the normal procedure if your an amateur photographer like me, and you have a few photos that you think the papers would be interested in, would you just e.mail them into as many papers as you can, add your name and phone number, and wright a bit about the photo……is it that simple? or is that the wrong approach.
summerdreamnMemberhere’s a good thread with info on file sizes and info to send with the pic,
ParadoxPicturesParticipantHi Iris,
I have a few friends who are in the PA and deal in sending images to newspapers. There is usually a basic system because of the stiff competition: You give a short description, the location and your name. eg. “Girl on M1 holding flowers- Picture by Iris”
This is because editors go through reams of images on a daily basis and they just want the hard facts. This means they can get that info into print without having to trim down photographer’s epic stories about the image.
Upon the other points, I would say send your photos to as many papers as you can. I mean, you are dealing with digital files so it is not costing you anything but time. The more papers you send images to the more chance you have of getting some feedback- even if it is a harsh, “Please stop sending us Rabbit photos.”
Best of luck,
Peter
IrisParticipantThanks for that peter/paradoxpictures, so if i had a great news picture lets just say, a picture of “michael lynn” sipping a martini on the costa del somewhere, and i sent it into all the papers would they not say to themselves, this guy is after sending this same picture to every paper in the country so it wouldn’t be an exclusive picture, so why would they print it. And yes i know if i did have that picture they would be all knocking on my door. I am just using this as an example.
eshortieParticipantHi all,
I also hope to get in with some papers within the year, once I finish my Leaving Cert probably.
Is it best to formally approach papers offering service as a photographer or should you just send
in images which you believe would be used/printed?
