Getting the best pictures in low light

SO still getting the hang of my D90, I would like to be able to get good pictures in low light, i bought a 35mm f1.8 Nikon lens, hopefully this will help. but sometimes when trying to capture a moving object in low light eg my nephew or sister’s dogs the blur too easily. would i be better off getting a Nikon sb600 or similar, or is there any recommended settings for low light, i am only shooting in P mode at the moment, and i hate the washed out affect the built in flash gives. Does anyone know of any good books or guides i can get my hands on to improve my pictures in this area.

Stick it on aperture priority and bang up the iso a bit

whats the highest ISO you can go before you start to get noticeable noise in the picture, currently on ISO 200 i think

Not sure with Nikon but 600 to 800 should be fine, I great book which is
recommended a lot on this site is “Understanding Exposure” an easy to
read and understand no nonsense book…….when I read it the penny
    dropped :)

I wouldn’t be adverse to banging the iso up as far as 3200. What matters more, not getting the shot, or getting a noisey shot?

Also depends on what sort of format print you want to produce from the end result. Sometimes I find shots that I have gotten at high iso look a whole lot better once on a physical medium.
