For anyone that’s wondering what’s going on with Gmail this is taken from the Irish Time

Google’s web-based e-mail service Gmail crashed earlier today, leaving millions of users around the world unable to send and receive messages.

Users attempted to log into their accounts this morning have been greeted with server error messages.

Google has confirmed the outage and said it is attempting to resolve the problem. The problems started around 10.20am and are believed to affect web users, with access still available via desktop inboxes and phones.

The company is encouraging affected users to visit the Gmail Help Centre at mail.google.com/support to check for status updates.

“We’re aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a number of users. This problem occurred at approximately 1.30am Pacific Time. We’re working hard to resolve this problem and will post updates as we have them. We apologise for any inconvenience that this has caused,” the company said.

Gmail launched on April 1 2004 in beta release and became fully available to the general public in February 2007.

The web-based service is estimated to have around 25 million users worldwide.

113 million, according to this BBC article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7907583.stm?lss

I can’t even imagine the volumes of hardware and locations involved in supporting a service like that..!

It’s actually not as much as you might think – still a lot though
Ye know the way they give everyone 2.5gb of storage well they don’t really.
That is a theoretical limit. If all users actually woke up one day and decided to use
their 2.5gb they wouldn’t get. They estimate how many people might use this space.
It is only about 5% of all Gmail users that actually come close to using all their space.

If everyone used all there alloted space Google would need over 62500000 GB or 59 petabytes
