Hi all,
I know, I know, its been taken a million times but not yet by me so I had to have a go for myself. all C&C welcome.
sharonKWBarbsParticipantJust because it has been done a million times doesn’t necessarialy mean it is not worth doing again. This is a beautiful scene and is one of the main draws of the place – it is very well captured here with a beautiful mirror like reflection. The only slight negative is that the shadow on the left had side mountain is very dark. I suppose there is not much you could do apart from adjusting the composistion at the time.
Well done.
PippateeMemberOooooh Sharon…me like …
as mentioned already, the reason that this is such a widely seen image is that…well.. it’s actually a beautiful place…
The lake really is like a mirror …

johnson76ParticipantHey Sharon … great capture… you were lucky with the weather.
I am hoping to head up there this saturday.. can you tell me the name of the place you took this one … or the trail it was on .. I was there years before but was not into the photography that much .. hence all the questions now
thanks
Kevmiki gParticipantHi Sharon. I don’t tend to pay much heed to landscapes to be honest, as you’ve said, it’s been done a million times, but every now and again I come across an image that I actually do like, and this is one of them. The composition is nice. The mirrorlike reflection is nice. The lighting is a bit harsh though, and as KWBarbs mentioned, the shadow on the left is a bit too dark. It has a nice blue sky, but a few fluffy clouds would be nice, but these are things that you couldn’t change. The inclusion of the stone in the forground adds a good sense of scale to the scene. Overall a very pleasing image.
MikkaParticipantBeautiful shot Sharon pity about the shadow but that is definitely one thing you have no control over in that location considering it is being cast by a 380m high hill unless you are prepared to wait and wait and….
I took a shot from almost the exact same viewpoint last Sunday and like yours the area in shadow detracted.Johnson76, this is the Upper Lake.
sharonlMemberThanks all for the nice comments :D
Its the upper lake at around 9am. I’m wondering if the shadow might be slightly less if you get there a little earlier but I know that spot gets more and more in shadow throughout the day until most of that valley is in shade. Its a pity but hey, good luck on saturday going up, once it goes past around 9.30 or so the lake starts to ripple again so get there nice and early to get the glass effect before the breeze picks up.
Some fluffy clouds would have been perfect, I was hoping for some, it looked promising at around 8am but then they dissappeared with the fog. Got up at 5am to photograph the sunrise in dunlaoghaire but unfortunately it didn’t happen so this was an afterthought.
thanks all
sharonJMac-2006ParticipantNice picture Sharon,
I was there last week at 7am unfortunately weather wasnt great and the lake was like a sea with waves etc. in fact now that i think of it i havent seen a mirror like on upper lake despite quite a few early trips , have a few nice ones on lower lake with fluffy clouds though, so dont fault the things you couldnt control like clouds and shadow – you did well with what you had control over like composition and exposure :)
DeeboParticipantLovely shot, only been a few times and never got such a clear shot like this.
Maybe some dodgeing might help life the shadows, or try cloning the trees in from the other bank
Deejohnson76ParticipantThanks guys for all the info…. approx what time did ye start out walking to get there for 8:30 say… and from where.. total newbie here :D
Mr.HParticipantVery nice Sharon – As you say, a common view, but theres a reason for that – it’s a great place to get a good shot. This one has a lovely clarity to it.
As for the shadow’s – they are actually worse earlier in the morning as the sun is rising over your left shoulder here. My version of this is taken slightly earlier than 9am, (but a little later in the year) and has much more shadow. I’m guessing you may get least shadows if you are prepared for a really early mid summer shot where the sun will be rising closer to directly behind you.
Gary
sharonlMemberThanks all :D
Johnson76, if you go out there and park in the upper lake car park its literally around the corner, 2 minutes you cant miss it just follow the signs for the upper lake from the car park.
May be worth a trip back next mid-summer so and try and lift the shadows a bit. Unfortunately pretty much all the detail is lost in the shadow part so even a bit of dodging doesn’t really help, I tried adjusting the raw file to create 2 images one correctly exposed for the rest of the scene and one grossly over exposed to bring up the shadow part and merge the 2 in photoshop but even on the raw file, although it does contain some detail its of such bad quality it would look a bit rubbish slotted in. But hey, can always try again next year and even with the shadow I’m pretty happy with the shot. :D

johnson76ParticipantMickSParticipantBeautiful shot Sharon. I’ve never been lucky enough to be there when the water is like glass.
