Glendalough Ruins

ExpresbroParticipant
I’m sure there have been dozens upon dozens of shots of this place posted and most a lot better than mine. But this the first shot from a recent trip to Glendalough that I’ve spent any time working on. As Steve will attest to, the light wasn’t great, but I tried to capture some of the subtle tones of the walls and gravestones.
RobMemberYou’ve captured the walls pretty well despite the light Robbie. It’s a shame about the
sky being blown so completely and you might have been better off framing your image
on some part of the ruin that didn’t include it at all. Don’t mean to be picky, but you
need to straighten this one too. It’s leaning rather precariously to the left…Still, I like the detail and sharpness of the stonework.
Rob.
jb7ParticipantNice texture on this one,
though does seem a little grainy as well.
It looks like the weather both helped and hindered you;
stone looks great in the wet,
but I wonder if any of that moisture might have had an effect on your lens-
there does appear to be a bit of flare around the sky and the stone.
Maybe a little chromatic aberration as well. This one is nicely composed,
though maybe a little over saturated,
it might be a good candidate for going the opposite direction,
and converting to mono-I think it would really suit it-

ExpresbroParticipantThanks for the comments Lads. I did try to do something with the blown sky…and the best I could manage was to lower the contrast and brightness on it so it wasn’t quite so bright in comparison to the rest of the shot. Looking at this now on my work monitor…which is far superior to my home laptop…it does look a tad overcooked on the saturation front.
Joseph..I did play around with a mono conversion using the channel mixer layers method but I couldn’t get anything that I thought was better than the original, then again..I was tired when I was doing it so might have another go later. Feel free to play with it yourself if you like.
Rob..I don’t know if it’s the walls..or the angle I took the shot..but if I turn this slightly to the right it starts to look off to the right…or maybe it’s my eyes…

8)joe_elwayParticipantI don’t know how many times I’ve stood in there trying to figure out a good shot. I never got one but I like this. I’ve had the same problem in there as you did …. the blown out sky. I’m wondering if maybe the best time to shoot it is late afternoon …. when the place is probably busiest and least shuitable for photography.
I think you’ve got a really good composition here … maybe just a tiny, weeny bit more of the bottom stone on the ground. If you do reshoot, please share it with us again.
ExpresbroParticipantThanks Aiden :D
I’ll definitely be going there again soon..hopefully when the weather is a teeny bit warmer so my fingers don’t turn to ice… :D
Might even leave it till a bit later as you suggest..might be nice to try a longer exposure too…
Cheers
Robbie
