Going back to college???

Ok,
So here’s the deal,
I am a Dyslexic mother of 2, in my early 30 – I have a ‘day job’ which I hate (I also have a BA in Sculpture).
I love photography, but need to ‘up skill’.Here is one option
http://www.lcfe.ie/DAY-COURSES/School-of-Visual-Arts/Photography-Department/Advanced-Certificate-in-Photography-(Higher-Profes.aspx” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
Anybody any advice/opinions????
It’s a scarey thing, giving up a job in this day & age….
miki gParticipantHi Belinda.
Personally, I wouldn’t give up the day job. I think the best ways to up-skill would be to go out with your camera & shoot loads & join a club where you can meet like-minded people if possible. There are plenty of forums & tutorials on the net that can also help. On PI, post some of your work for c&c and don’t worry if you get some negative responses to your photos. These are normally a persons honest opinion, but it is only an opinion. The advice given (even if negative), is usually given to try to help you improve. We all start off as beginners & some of us never get beyond the snapshot stage, while others go on to create great work. Taking on a night class might be better than giving up your job.smbeeMembermiki g wrote:

I do go out and shoot loads, I really should upload more, that’s true.
I would love to join a camera club, I did try evening coarses – however I work in retail… so late night opening monday – friday, I work maybe 8am-5pm on monday 1pm-10pm on Tuesday and so on and so on. I signed up for and paid for a evening coarse, Thurday evening at 7.30pm, out of a 12 week coarse, I made to to 6 classes – working for the other ones :x
I have been looking at on line coarses too, but so expensive and unsure about how you would learn about lighting (for example) if you haven’t got the equipment at your disposal.

Anybody on here know anything about the above?
It is almost €700 – which is a lot!!!!
Has anybody signed up for it? Is it any good?
€700! I could buy some nice stuff with that.
So, if you were me and had €700 to spend, would it be glass or class?beanmakerParticipantHi,
Am in the same frame of mind as you I think.
Am working a job that’s going nowhere and really want to further my skills to make photography more than a hobby. I have seen some people I know do some distance courses from the likes of Kilroys and while they say they got a lot out of it I had to question paying €600 for information that is free online.
I had been a member of a photo club but tbh found it very boring and frustrating as it was a core group of people who set up the club and seemed more interested in promoting their work more than sharing skills and nurturing or developing new people.
So where am I at now, I have a little bit of rainy day savings which am hoping my wife will see fit to delve into and upgrading some of my glass and equipment to allow me broaden my range of skills. I am consciously making an effort to get out and shoot more of everything. the only class I want to take is post processing one.
Let me know what you decide to do.

scr33nMemberHi, Is there a particular area you want to get involved in? maybe see if you can talk to some working photographers in your area and try get some advice from them. You’ve already got a BA in a creative field, (same one as me!) maybe just see what the opportunities are first.
shutterbugParticipantThere is a wealth of information on you tube, you can learn so much from watching
the short video tutorials, and that is the beauty of them they are short so you are only
digesting small amounts of information at a time. Plenty of 1 day workshops around
to get some hands on lighting tuition, then it is putting all this new information into
practise and that is the key practise, practise and more practise. Decide what type of
photography you want to get into then try to get a bit of experience in that field if
possible by offering to help out in a studio environment for free.
