Good Idea or Not?
-
figParticipant
Ok, I’ve had this idea for a while now and as I had some free time today I thought I’d do a proof of concept to see if it works. The idea is basically a website for tourists and photographers to scout out locations, get directions etc. It would be in the form of a Google map with pins showing the varous locations featured with photos in the popups. I know something like this probably exists but this would be specifically for Ireland and it would be tied into a group on flickr. i.e. any image added to the group with geographical information would automatically feature in the website.
I thought of this because I was recently going to spend a week around Ireland in places I hadn’t been before and would have loved to browse photos to get ideas for some photos. I also notice from time to time people coming on here and asking “where to go to take photos in…”
Is this a tool only I would use and perhaps I’m wasting my time? Do you think there would be enough people interested in the flickr group to populate the site with useful locations?
The proof of concept page I made is currently Tied into the group “Beautiful Ireland” on flickr and only has basic info and a link to the medium format photo. Feel free to add a photo with goegraphical information to this group and see the pin appear on the proof of concept page. In the final version of course there will be a link to the users flickr page etc.

Mick451ParticipantfigParticipantYeah, I saw that before (although forgot before starting this today :-) ) I suppose my idea of linking it into flickr and to a specific group is you can maintain a standard and also develop the community of people with discussions, mods etc. Having a separate website also allows to target content directly to an Irish audience. Not sure if that’s enough added value though?
MarkKeymasterWell I guess general non-photographer folk could just look at google maps directly or search flickr.
If its a standalone site, then key would be getting it to the top of search engines.I’ve been looking at google maps for the site here as an addon for the site.
Have an open source type solution. Idea being that photographers would look
on PI for that type of info…figParticipantI definitely think it would be a good add-on but it would have to be easy for users to populate the map. That’s why I tried to tie it into flickr who have gone to great lengths to develop their community and map technology already. I noticed a new website in the last few weeks that is trying to do something similar but there is no automated tie in and their website is actually a forum like here. I just can’t see that working.
It’s very basic so far but I’d be happy to pass on the code I’ve written if you want it?

Mick451ParticipantfigParticipantYeah I suppose centering it around flickr was based on the idea that flickr would do the heavy lifting and it’s not much effort for people who are on flickr to add a photo to a group. I’m not sure if I would invest any more of my time uploading to more sites than I already do. I think if the group was run well (maybe invite only and automated clearing out) it could be the way to go?
andy mcinroyParticipantFig,
I’m using panoramio to geotag and map a selection of my photographs. It doesn’t support groups but it is perhaps the biggest geotagging project on the web. Panoramio was recently merged with Google Earth which now pulls in the images.
Take a look here

Alan RossiterParticipantThere is mytown that gives you ideas on what to photograph per town/county:

Alan.
figParticipantThat’s class Andy and exactly what I was thinking. The only difference being that it would be just for Ireland and geared towards photographers and tourists. I’m probably just trying to reinvent the wheel but the purpose of the site wouldn’t be to geotag the photos but to allow photographers and tourists to scout locations with good quality photos.
P.S. Wish I had the link to your map when I spent a week up that way last month :-(
figParticipantMytown.ie is good but again it’s not possible to get exact locations of those photos? I would like to have the ability to store “My location” and click on a link next to any photograph that would give me directions to that spot. Also a link to the person who took that photo so I could comment and ask more info.
