good times in Winnipeg

Hi,
I took in a custom car cruise night in Winnipeg recently, they have this big muscle car / custom car scene there since way back when. Folks just arrive from all over. There are also some bike folks there, making up a ton of photo oppertunities.
#1 Harley Dude. I’d been hovering trying to get a shot of the bike beside his when I realised he had mounted up, put on his helmet and planned to leave. he was facing straight into the evening sun, I figured it was worth asking for a shot.
#2 2nd harley dude. I waved the camera a little and made eye contact (at least I looked at his glasses), and got a nod. The background was crap, so I was shooting from low down, and he kept looking down at me, creating a huge shadow. I had to ask him to look up a little, and he did, and as I took the shot, all his mates started slagging him off for posing for me. Time to roll on!
#3 bike guy. When I moved from having taken shot #2, I realised the laughing was at one of his buddies copying the shot, just over my shoulder. a bunch of them were just back from sturges, the biggest harley get togehter in the states each year.

bingbongbiddleyParticipantThese are very good Merv. I like how you’ve included the context of the bikes in the first two. And like the interaction you had with the subjects. I’d say these guys are good craic from the sound of things.
1st one is my favourite here (just for the record :) )
MichellaParticipantHarley dudes….I sometimes think I missed the memo that went around on photographing these lads. So hard to read the tough exteriors. They are just too cool to smile but they are great posers. Number 1, great character and I like the angle of the handlebars.
I think you have to catch them when they’re alone or something, not in packs. Lone Harley riders seem just as likely to smile as the next guy, as long as there aren’t any other Harley riders to “catch” them interacting with a non-Harley dude…Which is why I love the third shot, they’re big softies really…It’s interesting also hearing about your interactions with your subjects…
