Graphics Tablet

ExpresbroParticipant
I saw a Graphics Tablet for sale in Maplins today for just under ?50 and I was wondering is this something worth investing in from the point of view of Image Editing? I’ve never used one of these before but I find trying to select outlines with a mouse infuriating sometimes. Since I’m probably going to be doing a lot more image editing in the near future is this something that will improve my editing or is it just me hankering after another gadget?
Noely FParticipantI use a Wacom Volito 2, great for editing and under ?50…well worth the investment
earthairfireParticipantNot too sure about the one from maplin, as I have no idea of the quality of it, but I find my Wacom tablet invaluable for creating paths, and drawing in detail freehand. I virtually don’t touch my mouse once photoshop is open!
You can pick up cheap wacom tablets like the sapphire or volito for around ?50 – they soon get a lot more expensive once you want a larger model though!

ExpresbroParticipantGreat. Thanks guys!! Any idea where I could pick one of these up in Dublin? I found one for ?60 on Dabs.ie but I’d prefer to pick it up in a bricks and mortar store if possible. The reviews look good anyway. Actually just did a quick search and Peats have it for ?45 online. Might check out there store in Blanch and see do they have it in stock for thesame price.
Thanks again.
ThorstenMemberI just got myself a Wacom Intuos 3 last weekend but haven’t had time to install it yet! However, I’m looking forward to using it. I’ve used “cheap” tablets before and to be honest, I’ve found them too frustrating and reverted to using a mouse as a result. But the Intuos 3 is in a different league, so like I said, I’m looking forward to using it!
ExpresbroParticipantAre any of you up on the technical specs of these things? That Maplins one has twice the “points of pressure” that the Wacom one has…but I suspect POP is a bit like Pixels..only tells half the tale.
earthairfireParticipantI think the resolution is measured in 2 ways – the pressure levels (i.e. how many variations on pen pressure it can measure), and the resolution i.e. how accurately the “XY” movement of your pen is recorded. In addition, some tablets will also record the angle of the pen / brush, and the rotation of the pen / brush. You can buy a range of different pens for the higher end ones, including air brush, marker etc etc to make it feel more natural and give you better control over different tools.

bp_meParticipantI’m using a graphire 4 classic xl. Makes life so much easier. Recommended.
