I would say in this case the selective colour doesn’t help the image but I would not agree that it never works.
I’m all for B&W images but another part of me is wondering would it look better in colour?
I think that the scene isn’t dramatic enough to be a B&W but that’s just my thoughts!
Thanks guys and I understand it doesn’t work for many. I guess what justifies the approach for me is how the painted villages on the western seaboard rise from the bleakness of the surrounding rock , especially as we move towards winter and it is that, that I am trying to emphasis/portray, though maybe better via localised darkening / minor selective desaturation of the surrounds
“Selective colour never works” Kind of a silly comment. I don’t think it works in this image but I take my hat off to your patience to mask all those little houses in :)
Usually you will find that selective colouring is only added to 1 part of the image t give it that little something extra. have a look on Flickr for examples and ideas.
